🔧 What's He Standing In?

Ever wonder what those underground boxes are that utility crews work inside?

This team member is working in a utility handhole, an important access point in a fiber optic network. These underground structures allow crews to:

✅ Route fiber through conduit systems
✅ Make cable connections and splices
✅ Inspect and maintain existing infrastructure
✅ Access underground utilities without additional excavation

Handholes play a critical role in keeping fiber installations organized, protected, and accessible for future maintenance. While much of the work happens underground and out of sight, these access points help keep communities connected to reliable high-speed internet.

While we are on an 🟠 kick..

Meet tracer wire—the underground utility world's version of GPS and the underground utility world's way of saying, "Don't lose me!"

Since fiber optic cable and non-metallic conduit can't be located on its own, tracer wire (which is a copper wire coated with a plastic/poly sheathing) tags along so future crews know exactly where everything is buried.🚧

Think of it as leaving breadcrumbs... except these breadcrumbs help prevent excavators from finding your fiber the hard way.

Orange conduit is the standard color for communications including fiber optic networks, telephone lines and CATV.

Behind every utility project is a whole lot of conduits, planning, and a crew making it happen one reel at a time.

Ever wonder how contractors create perfectly round openings in concrete without tearing up the entire area?

This crew is using a core drill, a specialized piece of equipment that cuts through concrete and asphalt with precision. Core drilling is commonly used for:

✔️ Utility installations

✔️ Material testing and sampling

✔️ Sign and pole installations

✔️ Access for underground infrastructure

✔️ Reducing unnecessary surface damage

The red cylinder shown is called a core sample—a section of the material that's removed during the drilling process. These samples can also help engineers evaluate the condition and thickness of existing pavement or concrete.

At JRP, precision matters. Using the right equipment helps us complete projects safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption.
