Today is Clinical Trials Day, a time to honor the researchers and participants in clinical studies. Clinical trials represent an invaluable means to acquire the rigorous and scientifically valid evidence necessary to deliver, and innovate, life-saving interventions for patients.

At Merit, we recognize that the opportunity to conduct clinical trials is a privilege, not a right. We take this privilege seriously knowing the life-saving potential of our products and devices for patients. Globally, our Clinical Affairs team ensures that, as a company, we remain compliant with all applicable laws and regulations necessary to conduct the clinical trials needed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of our devices.

The impact that clinical trials have had in advancing patient care remains invaluable; however, its history is not untarnished. Previous research efforts to understand the natural history of disease and test the rigors of therapies were achieved, but not without significant harm to human subjects. The impact of these abuses led to the establishment of ethical policies upheld by regulatory and governing bodies to ensure researchers comply with the highest ethical standards.

This Women's History Month, we're honoring the women in science, medicine, and technology whose work made modern care possible.

Here are a few who paved the way:

Marie Curie discovered radium and polonium and developed and deployed the first mobile X-ray units used on WWI battlefields. The foundation of modern radiology and radiation therapy starts with her.

Nanette Wenger, MD reshaped how heart disease in women is diagnosed and treated, and changed how cardiovascular devices and therapies are evaluated.

Sara Murray Jordan, MD specialized in peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer and became the first woman president of the American Gastroenterological Association in 1942, advocating for medical treatment of GI conditions at a time when surgery was the default.

Priscilla Kincaid-Smith, MD identified the link between common analgesics and kidney disease in the early 1960s, built one of the world's leading renal transplant programs, and became the first female president of the International Society of Nephrology.

Their work lives on in the care patients receive around the world.

We're grateful for their contributions that pushed us forward.
