Finger on the redial, busy signal for the fourteenth time — and then it rang through and your heart nearly stopped.
You told him the song, spelled your name twice, and then sat one inch from the speaker with your finger hovering over the record button on the cassette player. Waiting. Listening through three other songs, two commercials, a weather report. And then his voice came through the static: "This one goes out to..." — and your name filled the whole room. For thirty seconds you were famous in your own kitchen. That feeling had no modern equivalent and never will.
We had to work for our music — the dialing, the waiting, the perfect moment when it finally came through. That's why it meant everything.
