Spring cleaning!

Today's a beautiful day outside so I have both bay doors open and after all the recent cold weather, the fresh air coming through the shop feels great!

So I figured it was a good time to get a jump start on some spring cleaning.

Today’s target: Rex, our 750-ton Bliss press.

A little wipe down, clearing out the chips and oil, and getting everything looking respectable again.

Machines like this run hard every day, so it’s nice to give them a little attention when we get the chance.

And in case you’re curious about Rex:
The bed on this press is 48" × 84" with a shut height of 58", plenty of room for some serious tooling!

Press 15 isn’t just a machine, it’s part of our story here at FBF Inc. 💪

This impressive 500 Ton press runs a unique die equipped with a transfer arm that moves parts through three stages.

Last year alone, it produced an incredible 452,352 parts, all while running at a steady 16 strokes per minute (SPM).

The die itself has been with us since 1996, proving that quality craftsmanship and expert maintenance can stand the test of time.

Interesting fact about 15, I ran this press for about a year when I was younger and working on the floor!

9 feet of steel moving through the shop today.

This is our turret punch press running a 9 foot long part for the trucking industry in .075" thick galvanized steel.

For anyone not familiar with turret punch presses:

They use a rotating turret of tools to punch, form, and cut features quickly and repeatably.

They’re great for parts like this where you need consistent hole patterns, clean features, and tight spacing from end to end.

What I like about turret punch presses is how much they can do in a single setup when everything is planned right.

Also… watching a 9 foot part run smoothly never gets old. 😄

Want to be loved in a manufacturing shop?

Bring food!

A trick I learned from my dad:
In PA, a big bag of soft pretzels solves a lot.

It's Friday, hope everyone has an awesome weekend!

Audit complete. ✅

And I’m thrilled to say it went really well!

The ISO 9001:2015 audit wrapped up, and honestly my favorite part wasn’t the paperwork or the process discussions, it was getting to sit in on employee interviews.

A few people were nervous going into it. Totally fair. Audits can feel intimidating, especially if you don’t know what to expect.

But once they started talking about the work they do every day, they rose to the challenge and absolutely nailed it.

That’s the moment I enjoy most. When the system isn’t just words on paper, but real people showing how the work actually gets done.

I’m incredibly proud of the team and grateful for the effort they put in.

Huge thank you to Mike Medvic for stepping up and representing us so well.

This is the stuff that makes quality worth it.
(P.S. - We were hit by a blizzard on Monday, really threw things off. lol. But look at that snow!)

It's that time of year again! ISO 9001:2015 audit.

I know it probably sounds strange, but I genuinely enjoy it!

ISO 9001:2015 is the framework behind how we keep our processes consistent, our quality predictable, and our improvements intentional.

As a quality guy, a lot of the work happens quietly in the background.

These audits are my time to show off my quality department and the processes that go into it. Plus I get to give the shop tour.

Today I'm prepping for the audit, which is pretty much me running around frantically with a bottle of cleaner. Wish me luck!

Shop upgrade: New Gloves!

We picked up a new style of gloves to try out in the shop today, and you’d think we just changed everyone’s toolbox without asking. 😅

Most of us wear gloves all day, every day, so yeah… this is a big deal around here. The opinions started flying immediately, and nobody is holding back.

I’ll say this, I think they’re a good fit. They are cut and puncture resistant (which is important with sheet metal), they fit well, and honestly, I think they look pretty cool too.

But it’s not about what I think.

By the end of the day, we’ll know exactly how the team feels.
What do you think? What type of gloves do you use?

5,978 lbs. of steel in one coil.

That's 29,890 lbs. of material unloaded off this truck.
And in this aisle? Another 119,560 lbs.

That's a total of 149,450 lbs. of .126" hot rolled steel.

How cool is metal stamping?
And that’s only for two parts!

The best part, one of our progressive presses will run 3-4 of these coils in a single day, turning raw steel like this into thousands of consistent stamped parts.

(I hope everyone's having a good week!)😃

Batch sampling kind of day over here.

On some jobs, we use AQL-based sampling to determine the quality of the batch.

It lets us inspect a sample that’s large enough to confidently decide whether the whole batch meets requirements.

Today’s job is a single stroke stamping job of 588 parts, which means pulling a sample of 34 pieces for inspection.

If the sample looks good, the lot passes.
If it doesn’t, we stop, dig in, and figure out why.

I run our quality department, so making sure checks like this are done right is something I take a lot of pride in.

🚨 Curious if metal stamping is a good fit for your parts?

When production tries to talk me out of an inspection,

I ignore them the same way a cat ignores its name being called.
I hear the words… I just simply decline to participate.

Happy Friday and have an awesome weekend, everyone! 😄

Time to clean the surface plate.

I’ve got a doozy of a granite surface plate, 53" x 94", and we use it constantly, so it gets cleaned pretty routinely to keep it inspection-ready.

Here’s how I usually clean it:

First pass is a light cleaner to knock down the everyday grime. Nothing fancy, just a mix of Dawn and water.

Next, a light spray of denatured alcohol. This takes care of the tougher spots and gives the table a nice shine.

Right after that, I wipe it down with a clean, dry cloth to make sure there’s no residue or wet spots left behind. No streaks, no excuses.

About every other month, I’ll go a step further and use Starrett waterless plate cleaner. It’s more of a gel and does a good job pulling dirt out of the pores of the granite… fair warning though, it’s got a strong smell.

I know everyone has their own method, so I’m curious, how do you clean your surface plates?

Fixture calibration day.

We use fixtures in manufacturing to make measurements repeatable and consistent they help remove operator variation and let us trust the data we’re getting.

I’ve been looking forward to working on this one for a while. It’s on a 2-year calibration cycle, and honestly… it was due for a little TLC.

The measurements checked out, but the wiring was a mess. Finally got the chance to clean things up and I got rid of the wires and screwed a container to the base.

Calibrations might be my personal version of Groundhog's Day at this point.

Happy Groundhog Day 🦫😄 Six more weeks of winter!
