Back-to-school season is one of our favorites.

At Alderson Engineering, we've had the privilege of working on K-12 education projects like Bryn Athyn Church School right here in our own backyard, and there's something especially meaningful about engineering spaces where children learn and grow.

When we design MEP systems for schools, we're not just thinking about mechanical, electrical, and plumbing. We're thinking about the kids... Are the classrooms comfortable? Is the air quality good? Is the lighting right for learning? Are the spaces safe?

The best school buildings create environments where students can focus on what matters because everything behind the walls works exactly as it should.

Five stories. 131 apartments. 19,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. One level of below-grade parking. And a full suite of amenity spaces designed to keep residents connected day and night.

Geothermal heating and cooling for a Philadelphia school?

Philadelphia Gas Works recently commissioned a feasibility study exploring whether a geothermal system could heat and cool John F. McCloskey Elementary School and the Dorothy Emanuel Recreation Center in Cedarbrook at a lower long-term cost than conventional HVAC.

Our own Principal Neal Babcock was asked to weigh in: "Geothermal systems reduce the total energy consumption to heat and cool the building."

Geothermal energy is not a new concept, but its application in Philadelphia's public schools could serve as a blueprint for how the city heats and cools its buildings for years to come. We're proud to be part of that conversation along with Philadelphia Gas Works.
