When most people think about an electric vehicle, they think about transportation: miles of range, charging at home, and the cost of electricity compared with gasoline. But an Electric Vehicle can do something many people may not realize: Its battery can potentially become a source of electricity for your home. That changes the way we think about electric vehicles. Instead of simply being a vehicle that consumes electricity, an EV can also function as a large, mobile energy-storage system. This capability is known as vehicle-to-home, or V2H.
THE CYBERTRUCK AS A HOME BATTERY
According to Tesla, the Cybertruck has a 123-kWh battery. Through Tesla’s Powershare technology, it can provide up to 11.5 kW of continuous power to a home. For comparison, a Tesla Powerwall battery has 13.5 kWh of energy capacity. That means the Cybertruck’s battery has roughly nine times the energy capacity of a single Powerwall battery. That is a remarkable amount of stored energy sitting in a vehicle parked in your driveway.
A THREE-DAY OUTAGE
Imagine a major storm knocking out power for three days. Instead of relying on a gasoline generator that requires a continuing supply of fuel, a Cybertruck equipped with Powershare Home Backup can supply electricity to the home for three days or more. The homeowner could manage consumption throughout the outage—using more electricity when needed and reducing usage when necessary to preserve the battery. The Cybertruck can effectively become a large emergency energy reserve on wheels.
IT'S ALREADY IN THE DRIVEWAY
Perhaps the most interesting part of this technology is that the battery doesn't have to sit in a basement, garage, or utility room. Under normal conditions, it provides transportation. During an outage, it can provide electricity. And when the grid comes back, the same battery goes back to its primary job: moving the vehicle. An electric vehicle may become one of the largest pieces of energy storage a homeowner owns.
