This week at the AM2F 2026 conference at MIT, Dr. Joshua R. Boykin will present REM Surface Engineering's latest research on post-processing for metal additive manufacturing.

His talk, "Chemically Enabled Depowdering and Internal Surface Finishing for Advanced Additive Manufacturing Designs," is part of the Cooling session and begins at 9:50 AM EDT (3:50 PM CET).

The presentation covers our chemically based approach for removing trapped powder and finishing complex internal geometries produced by metal powder bed fusion. By circulating alloy-specific formulations through obstructed channels, this process expands the practical design space for additively manufactured components. This reduces the dependence on direct mechanical access, which is highly relevant for fusion energy systems that require intricate cooling networks and conformal thermal management.

REM Surface Engineering has been named one of six winners in the 2026 Department of War Organic Industrial Base (OIB) Modernization Challenge, funded by the Office of the Under Secretary of War, Manufacturing Technology Office (OSW ManTech). REM has been awarded $10.5 million to accelerate advanced additive manufacturing technologies and improve U.S. defense readiness. Released in cooperation with America Makes – managed by the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) – and the Manufacturing Innovation Institutes, this award will allow REM to install on-site post-process superfinishing capabilities at multiple OIB depots across the USA, unlocking the rapid manufacturing capabilities of additive manufacturing.

“This award represents over a decade of additive manufacturing research and development by REM, and builds on over sixty years of experience in ensuring critical component performance via our precision superfinishing technologies. It is an incredible moment in the history of our company, and truly affirms our team’s efforts in establishing ourselves as the leading gateway technology unlocking full-scale Additive Manufacturing adoption and implementation.” – Nathan Michaud, Vice President of Strategy and Owner.

“We are incredibly proud of this moment, and the work our team has put towards this award. The growth and evolution of REM from our modest beginnings in 1965, supporting the New England plating industry, to where we are today, a global technology leader in surface finishing, is a testament to the efforts of REM’s many team members over the years. I look forward to speaking about this award in more depth in the near future, but for now, I’m proud to say that REM is helping to support the readiness and sustainment needs of the US military, and I want to thank both America Makes and NCDMM for enabling this sort of public-private partnership.”- Justin Michaud, CEO and Owner.
