For all you techies out there, here is a raw point cloud that was generated by mapping Columbus Circle in New York City. While HD maps like these are not necessary for self-driving, they can be helpful in conditions where road lines have been worn away or covered in snow. By looking at the buildings and lamp posts around the vehicle, you can calculate your position in the map to within a few centimeters of precision.

Where can you find the most challenging intersections in the USA? NYC of course! We started 3D mapping key intersections in NYC over the weekend to test various algorithms on complicated roads. Here we see our test vehicle mapping Columbus Circle, a fun intersection indeed! Who would have thought driving around in circles could be so exciting!
