A sharp construction slowdown todayโbut a possible pipeline for tomorrow.
New U.S. Census Bureau data released August 18 shows that total housing starts fell 12.4% in July to an annualized rate of 1.239 million. Single-family starts declined 9.9% to 808,000.

What does this mean for contractors and manufacturers?
The decline in starts confirms weaker current activity. The increase in permits may indicate projects accumulating in the pipeline, but it does not guarantee that construction will begin immediately. Mortgage rates, financing, regional demand, and material costs will still influence timing.
The practical move is to avoid planning labor from one headline alone. Companies should compare local permit activity with their backlog, production schedule, and expected start datesโthen secure flexible, experienced workers before approved projects begin competing for the same skilled labor.
How is your company balancing todayโs slower activity with the possibility of stronger project demand ahead?
