But does it actually cut square?

That was probably the #1 question after the first video of this under-$400 VEVOR Home Improvement pipe beveling machine.

So instead of guessing, I made another cut.

I marked where the wheel started, let the machine make one continuous cut around the pipe without adjusting it, then checked the finished cut with a 2’ square.

The result: about 1/16” out.

That was with pretty minimal setup getting the machine positioned on the pipe.

For a pipe beveling machine that costs under $400, I’ll let you guys decide what you think of the result.

Would you run one—or are you sticking with the traditional machines?

And since so many of you asked about it on the last video… I think running it across a pipe seam might need to be the next test.

A lot of you asked what I used to lay out that 20” pipe branch.

So here it is.

These are the basic tools and steps I used to take the measurements from the Pipe Fitters Blue Book and turn them into an actual cut line on the pipe.

I start with the center finder to establish my top quarter. From there I establish my baseline, divide the pipe into 16ths, and use those reference lines to transfer the measurements from the Blue Book onto the pipe.

And yes—the receipt paper is part of the process.

Once all the measurement points are marked, I use a flexible pipe wrap to connect those points and create the smooth radius that becomes my cut line.

Then it’s time for the torch.

There are different ways guys lay these out. This is the way I was taught and the method I’ve used for pipeline branch tests and fabrication over the years.

Do you remember where you were on September 11, 2001?

I do.

I was in 8th grade, walking from my first class to my second class, which was FFA.

When I walked into the classroom, the TV was already on. The first tower had been hit, and we were all trying to understand what we were watching.

Then we watched the second plane hit.

The whole classroom was quiet.

Even as an 8th-grade kid, you knew you were watching something you couldn’t fully comprehend. I didn’t understand everything that was happening or what it would mean for our country, but I knew it was something I would never forget.

25 years later, I still remember that classroom and that morning.

For those of you who were old enough to remember September 11th:

Where were you when you heard what was happening?

We remember.

Just a little morning update from Mid State Welding.

Today looks a little different around here. Rodney is on the road, we swapped trucks, the kids are along for the ride, and we’re keeping things moving back home.

But yesterday was also a reminder of what it means to be part of a community like Spearfish.

With the Lookout Fire going, we made a run to pick up some supplies for the firefighters and let them know that if equipment goes down and there’s something Mid State Welding can help repair, we’re here.

We’re proud to own a business in this community—but we’re even more proud to be a part of this community.

There are a lot of firefighters, first responders, volunteers, local businesses and community members stepping up right now. Thank you to everyone who’s been working to protect our town and the people who call this place home.
