Each year, Maris engineer John Redshaw volunteers his time in helping Hilton's 6868 Cadet Robotics team.

The team placed 16 out of 55 teams during international qualification matches. During the second match of elimination rounds, the team was chosen as an alternate bot for the number one seed alliance, and with their help, the alliance ultimately won the entire competition!

Congratulations to the team and to Redshaw! Inspiring work for future generations 👏 🤖

We often think of automation in the workplace, but what about at home? What do you think of Amazon's "smart shelf" for automated shopping?

Amazon's internet-connected scale automatically re-purchases whatever you stack on it when supplies get low. This is both neat and problematic.

Automation is about augmenting human ability, not copying it.

"Instead of merely saving costs by replacing humans with a bot, Brynjolfsson notes, augmentation increases people’s productivity. Better yet, some of the economic value of that productivity would accrue to workers because their augmented labor would become more valuable. It wouldn’t all be hoovered up by the billionaire owners of the tech."

The economy could get a boost if machine learning engineers switched from copying human abilities to augmenting them.
