Moisture was too high, so we had to dry the subgrade to bring it within spec and achieve proper density before placing select fill.

This project required proof rolling and density testing on the subgrade.

The question we always hear 👂
How many inches to strip?

Most of the time you’re looking at:
• 3”–6” for typical grass/topsoil
• Up to 8”+ if it’s thick organics, roots, or really dark/top-heavy soil

The goal isn’t a fixed number it’s removing all organics until you hit firm, workable subgrade. If you still see roots, dark soil, or it feels spongy, keep going.
