We’re excited to be competing among 19 applicants for a U.S. Economic Development Administration grant to establish a national testbed for next-generation aerospace prototypes in Spokane and a technical education and job training center in Post Falls, Idaho.

The proposed Advanced Manufacturing and AI Training Center would expand North Idaho College’s campus and equipment in partnership with the University of Idaho, Gonzaga University, Washington State University, and Spokane Colleges.

This effort reflects a truly unified Inland Northwest, bringing together local manufacturers and global aerospace leaders including The Boeing Company, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Spirit AeroSystems, Toray Advanced Composites, Syensqo, and many regional employers.

We’re also grateful for the strong support from elected officials across Idaho and Washington who are helping keep American aerospace jobs here in our region. Read more about the recent application here: https://aerospacetechhub.com/aerospace-testbed-tech-ed-wa-id/

During testimony this week before the Senate Commerce Committee, The Boeing Company CEO Kelly Ortberg called thermoplastic composites a “major, important technology area we should be investing in,” noting their potential to “streamline the production of aircraft” and drive job creation in the industry.

In response to questions from Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Ortberg specifically praised her leadership and the impact of the AAMMC Tech Hub based in Washington State. “The Tech Hub work that you’ve done in Washington is very helpful,” he said, highlighting the region’s role in advancing next-generation manufacturing technologies.

With demand for 40,000 new planes worldwide and a national workforce of over 2 million in aviation, this is a critical moment for investment, innovation, and leadership—right here in Washington.

We are featured on GeekWire this morning! Many great thoughts in this piece from our consortium members and regional leaders about what we are trying to achieve nationally and locally with the AAMMC Tech Hub.

“We would be the only place in the world to have that capability to make plane parts of that size, and of the type that we need,” Senator Maria Cantwell said in April. “That full-scale fabrication of composite components — for everything from ribs to beams to wings to frames to bulkheads — I think could put us in a place of demonstrating the scale that we need.”

“The Tech Hub designation marks in inflection point for the City of Spokane. While innovative manufacturing and collaborative research are already happening here, the Tech Hub will take the region to new heights by bolstering that work, boosting our local economy, and creating desirable, good-paying jobs,” said Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown:

Tech leaders in the Spokane area are waiting to hear whether the federal government will fund a research center for advanced composites.
