How much force will it take for these vise jaws to move?

Welcome back to part 3 of this comparator series between the Heuer 160 vise and the Fireball Hardtail 510 high-pressure vise. We took a load cell and dial indicator to collect data on how much force it would take to deflect the vise jaws unparallel. The Heuer vise deflected at 0.100” at 5,000 lbs of force. The Fireball 510 Hardtail high-pressure vise at 5,000 lbs only had 0.02” of deflection. Even at double the input force at 10,000 lbs, the Fireball Hardtail 510 only deflected about 0.035”. That the size of a business card, you can’t see it, it’s that strong. Stay tuned for part 4 when we test how much down force would it take to bend the vise downwards.

Why is this vise so weak in clamping force?

We tore both vises down to keep digging. The Heuer’s wedge-shaped static jaw guide binds under load. A screw that pulls off-center from the slide. Dont forget a nut welded permanently in place. That means bad news if you strip those threads.

The Fireball Hardtail does none of that. Machined fit with no slop, screw and tube nut dead center, thrust bearings front and back. It’s the difference between power steering and no power steering on a vehicle.

And that tube nut? Pull it out, rethread it, or replace it. You should have the right to repair your own tools.

Why is the clamping force so low on this vise?

The Heuer vise may be able to open fast but that comes with a tradeoff, it’s not as strong as you think. This vise only has the clamping force of 5,000 Ibs, while the Fireball Hardtail 510 High Pressure vise can easily go over 12,000 Ibs. The Fireball vise is only a few seconds away from the Heuer vise in speed, but a true worker will value the overall design choice in their workshop. Vise clamping force test: Heuer 160 vs Fireball Hardtail Compact,510, and 614.

Same input every time - 100 ft-lbs on the torque wrench. Here’s what came out.

Hardtail compact - $520, 6.5” opening, 12,100lbs
Heuer 160/180 $1,100, 9” opening, 5,144 lbs
Hardtail 510 - $1,610, 12” opening, 12,500 lbs
Hardtail 614 - $2,070, 14” opening, 13,000lbs

Cost per 100 lbs of clamping force: Compact $5.20, 614 Hardtail $6.90, 510 Hardtail $8.05, Heuer $13.98

The 614 is the most expensive vise here and still one of the best values - triple the clamping capacity for about a third more per pound of force. But capacity is a threshold, not a score. If your parts needs 14” of jaw, the Compacts value rating doesn’t matter.
