It is spring time a lot of downy brome is coming up in winter wheat normal ways to control Downy Brome is with grass w**d Sulfonyl Urea or Sulfonamide Herbicide Products like are Maverick (Outrider), Olympus and Osprey.
All of these herbicides increase in solubility with increasing pH. AgraSyts builds a product called Sure Up. Specifically, to take advantage of this chemical property. Sure UP, is the sulfonyl urea specialist adjuvant. Since I was involved in the early development of these wheat selective grass herbicides, I learned about the best surfactant blends for these herbicides.
SO, at AgraSyst we put a buffer to raise the pH of the spray solution to pH of 9-10 into a great surfactant blend. At this pH SU’s are totally water soluble. This increases the herbicides surface area and diffusion rate into the plant. Thus, increasing activity.
Use Sure Up at 1-2 qts per 100 gal. spray solution it will significantly improve SU herbicide performance. (check label for rates)
Note: All of the SU wheat herbicides rely of metabolism for wheat selectivity. So, the weather conditions are important when you are making your applications. You should have 1-2 days good growing conditions before applications and 4 days good grower conditions after application. If you miss this window, you might notice a little stunting. Normally the wheat will grow out of it with no yield reduction the safest one of these grass wheat SU herbicides is likely Outrider.
Sure Up works with all SU herbicides. Increased pH will increase solubility which in turn increases herbicide activity. Check the label of the herbicide you are using. A fair number of SU will have a 1% v/v MSO recommendation. In this case a good way to go is 1qt Sure Up and 3qts MSO.
Below Maverik (Outrider) tank mixed with Sure Up. A field shot of how this translates to the field.
