TDCI Commissioner Carter Lawrence and Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti have issued the following joint statement regarding insurance claims following the recent winter storm that caused significant damage across Middle Tennessee:
"The recent storm has caused substantial hardship for families and businesses throughout Middle Tennessee, particularly in Davidson County and surrounding areas. Our thoughts and prayers are with every Tennessean affected by this disaster. Some are without homes, many are without power, and the focus needs to be on keeping them safe and getting utilities, roads, and structures fixed as quickly as possible.
As the ice thaws and repairs proceed, Tennesseans will rebuild. During that process, those affected Tennesseans will deserve fair and prompt handling of their insurance claims.
The Department of Commerce & Insurance and the Office of the Attorney General are committed to working together to ensure insurance companies fulfill their contractual and legal obligations. We have every expectation that insurance companies will satisfy their obligations and treat policyholders properly. If any company should fail to do right by its customers, if it wrongfully denies claims or otherwise engages in unfair practices, we will not hesitate to act.”
Tennessee consumers who believe their winter storm-related insurance claim has been wrongfully denied or who have concerns about their insurance company or agent can file a complaint online or by mail.
