Small Upgrades That Make a Big Difference 🚿

Not every bathroom project needs to be a full remodel.

For this West Michigan homeowner, we added strategically placed grab bars to an existing tiled shower to provide a little extra stability and confidence.

It’s a relatively small addition, but details like these can make an existing bathroom safer and more comfortable without sacrificing the clean look of the space.

Whether it’s a complete bathroom remodel or targeted improvements to an existing space, 3Builders can help.

📍 Serving Muskegon, Spring Lake, Grand Haven & surrounding West Michigan communities.

There’s something satisfying about pulling that last piece of tape alongside freshly painted trim.

This was a smaller basement project after water damage required a portion of the space to be rebuilt. The work included drywall replacement and finishing, door and jamb repairs, new casing, fresh paint, and new carpet running down the basement stairs.

Not every remodel has to be a complete transformation. Sometimes it’s about putting a damaged part of a home back together properly—and making the repairs blend into the existing space like they belong there.

The final details make the difference.

Turning a Garage Into a Year-Round Recreation Space 🏌️⚾💪

This garage is getting a completely new purpose.

What started with a fresh concrete floor and spray-foam insulation is being transformed into a dedicated recreation and gym space designed to be enjoyed year-round here in Michigan.

The finished space will include a golf simulator, baseball practice cage, workout equipment and more.

Right now we’re working our way through the walls and ceiling, but there’s more happening behind those finishes than you’ll eventually see. We’re incorporating custom structural supports for the netting along with backing in the walls and ceiling for accessories that will be installed later.

Planning those details now means the finished space can actually function the way the homeowners want it to—not just look finished.

A garage doesn’t always have to stay a garage. 🏡

Two Fireplaces. Two Completely Different Looks. 🔥🔥

One home. Two fireplace remodels happening at the same time.

We’ve opened up both existing fireplace structures and are getting them ready for two completely different finished looks. Both will receive the same new fireplace and stone selection, but that’s about where the similarities end.

🔥 One fireplace will feature a half-height stone surround.
🔥 The other will carry stone all the way up for a full-height feature wall.

Same materials. Different rooms. Completely different finished feel.

There’s a lot happening behind the finished surface of a fireplace remodel, and this is the stage where we can make sure everything is properly framed and prepared before we start putting it all back together.

Finish details coming soon.

Taking This Fireplace All the Way Up 🔥

This fireplace is staying—but everything around it is getting a major transformation.

Originally, the fireplace surround stopped about halfway up the wall. We’re extending the new design upward to give the fireplace more presence and make better use of the height of the room.

Right now we’re installing ProVia Summit Terra Cut stone, carefully laying out and selecting each piece to balance the different sizes, shapes and natural color variation throughout the surround. 🪨

The finished design will include:

🔥 Existing fireplace retained
🪨 ProVia Summit Terra Cut stone
⚒️ Gray grout
🪵 New wood mantel
🏡 New tile hearth

And because stonework is messy, you can see the protection surrounding the entire work area. Protecting the client’s home is just as much a part of our process as the finished craftsmanship.

There’s still plenty left to do, but this fireplace is already becoming a much stronger focal point in the room.

Stay tuned for the finished transformation.

A New Fireplace, Built From the Ground Up 🔥

This one started with an open wall—not an existing fireplace.

We designed and built an entirely new floor-to-ceiling fireplace to create a focal point that fits naturally into this vaulted living space.

The finished project features a Nordik 36 direct-vent gas fireplace, surrounded by Fond du Lac Glenwood natural stone with medium-gray grout. 🪨🔥

If you’ve followed along, you’ve seen this project through framing, fireplace installation, substrate preparation, stone layout and now the finished product.

Our goal wasn’t just to add a fireplace. It was to create something that feels like it has always belonged in the home.

Have a space where you’ve always wished there was a fireplace? It may be more possible than you think.

Fireplace Remodel: Welcome to the Ugly Phase 🔥

Every beautiful fireplace has to go through an ugly phase first. 😄

The new fireplace is installed, and now we’re preparing the surround for its new stone finish.

We start by applying a smooth, even scratch coat over the prepared substrate. Then we intentionally make it ugly—scratching deep grooves into the surface to create plenty of texture for the mortar and new stone to grab onto during installation.

It’s one of those steps that will never be seen once the fireplace is finished, but getting the details right underneath the finished materials is just as important as what you see at the end.

Next up: Cultured Stone Alpine Ledgestone. 🪨🔥

This fireplace is about to look very different. Stay tuned.

Custom Stone Fireplace Taking Shape 🔥

This new fireplace is really starting to take shape.

We’re installing Fond du Lac Glenwood natural stone around a new Nordik 36 direct-vent gas fireplace, and the character of this stone is already transforming the room. 🪨

One of the things we love about working with natural stone is that every piece is different. Before installation, we lay out and sort through the stone to balance sizes, shapes, textures and colors as the fireplace comes together.

Once the stonework is complete, we’ll be finishing the joints with a medium gray grout, which should provide just enough contrast while keeping the overall look natural and timeless.

There’s still plenty happening above the fireplace, but this gives a pretty good preview of where we’re headed.

Stay tuned for the next stage. 🔨🔥

Fireplace Remodel Underway 🔥

Another fireplace remodel is underway in West Michigan.

We’ve already:
• Removed the old stone surround
• Disconnected the gas and electrical
• Removed the old, broken fireplace
• Modified the framing for the new unit

Next up is installation of the new fireplace, followed by a completely new custom finish. Natural stone and tile are both being considered, with final selections still being made.

This is the stage where the transformation really starts to take shape. Stay tuned for the finished product.

Building a Fireplace From the Ground Up 🔥

This one isn’t a fireplace remodel—we’re creating an entirely new fireplace from the ground up.

The new structure is framed and beginning to take shape, extending up into the vaulted ceiling and creating a new focal point for this living space.

There’s a lot that happens before the finished materials ever go on: layout, proportions, framing, fireplace installation, mechanicals, substrate, and all the details that ultimately make the finished fireplace look like it was always meant to be there.

Next up, we’ll keep building this one out and start bringing the finished design to life. 🔥🏡

Planning a custom fireplace, kitchen, bathroom, basement, or larger home renovation in West Michigan? We’d be happy to talk through the possibilities.
