Northerns call to Green.

Northern recently converted it's entire building over to LED lighting.

It was an expensive undertaking, but well worth the investment. Not only are we doing our part saving electricity, the LED lights has created a much brighter work environment. The old bulbs ran at 25watts per, the new LED run at only 9watts while being much brighter.

The electric company covers about half the cost, and the other half is paid off in about one year because of the electrical savings.

The new addition is starting to get full. The new closed loop cooling system for molding as well as a new 25hp compressor from Kaeser to run the entire shop.
Brand new racking arrived from Maybury Material Handling, I post some more pictures once the racking is fully installed.

With the builders moved out, our addition is finally complete. The new Air Compressor Center from Kaeser arrived today. The electricians need to finalize their hookups to the compressor and new 120 Ton Plant wide cooling system. We should be fully operational before the end of the month. With only fire suppression needed before opening for employee use. We are almost there.

It's been a long road to get to this point. The benefits of the added room have already helped. The increased cooling capacity is much needed. We expect molding to have it's biggest year ever, and it will now be possible to run all of our molding machines at the same time on the hottest days of the year.

With the addition we've added some Green Tech. LED motion sensor lighting (the rest of the building soon to be converted), epoxy flooring, sealed windows, Compressor's VFD motor, and the compressor's discharged heat has enough BTU's to heat the expansion on it's own (Will only need to add A/C!!).

Future improvements set for this year. Card swipe access, additional security cameras, VOIP phone system, Renishaw probes for CNC, new high speed milling machine, and possibility of adding an additional Wire EDM. We are well positioned to make '16 our best year ever.

Our expansion is just about complete. We started back in Sept, and it looks like we have it wrapped up by the first week in January. Elm Electric is about halfway done with all the new electrical service, to include LED light, super bright I highly recommend. Crocker builders are down to window installation and internal walls.

I'm off to NPE show in Orlando this Sunday. I'm excited to see all the new technologies in action, and to also see the advancements related to thermosets.

With the installation of our two 420ton Krauss Maffei thermoset injection molding machines I'm off to research machine robots, as well as specialized conveyor systems. I'll also be looking at cure sensors, 3D metal printers, and laser scanning cameras for our inspection department.

With Northern Tool's rapid expansion of its molding department it's important we have the knowledge required for staying competitive while also supporting our customers needs.

The long process of purchasing new molding equipment is coming to an end. We purchased 2 Krauss Maffei 420 ton thermoset molding machines back in November.
First we needed to make room. We reconfigured our tooling department to make room for three of our smaller injection molders. Which then gave us room for our huge Krauss machines.
Next we invested in upgrading and moving our electrical. Elm Electric did a great job working thru November and December adding an additional 1000 amps of 480v service, bringing us to 2500 amps at 480v, which is huge for a 15000 sq ft building. Getting in done in time so our two new molding machines were officially installed before Jan 1st.
We've just ordered our first robot, which we should see in about 8 weeks.
With all these changes to our molding department, Northern sees record sales in molding for 2015 beating our record sales in 2014.
Northern now has 8 injection molding machines from 160 ton to 420 ton, with one 300 ton compression machine as well.
