Sheathing details

As a builder and the general contractor I get some creative freedoms in my material choices. One of those choices is the sheeting we use.

If I make the choice, I'm choosing 5/8 cdx Everytime except on the rare occasion where I choose 3/4 cdx. Yes, it's a little heavier and yes we get to put the stud lines on but I find cdx ply to be a superior product.

We use galvanized ring shank nails for all the mailing as well. All our stud walls are 16" O.C. to help rigidity.

Let's face it, the lumber quality of today isn't what it use to be. The trees are smaller and the QC coming out of the mills is grading in what would have been considered utility grade 20-30yrs ago. There are more and more "engineered" products coming out to make up for lower quality building material so we as builders need to do our do diligence at providing a high quality product

Do as you will, there will be no judgement from us. But I've heard many times of you build a structure just to meet code requirements, it's not a very well built structure. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Rough framing of the structure is done!

Here's a little walk through of where we are at. There's still 2 entry covers to build and a bigger deck cover but those fall into the "exterior trim" category even there will be framing included. All that framing will be exposed, sooo.

Hope you are enjoying the progress updates. I know we are having a bunch of fun building this thing.

Am I the only one?

Honestly it does bug me a little when I see trim boards nailed at random. Even after they're caulked the nails are still visible.

Also worth mentioning, I even go as far as using only 3" galvanized hand drives. Yes this does make it more difficult to not pepper the trim with waffle marks if you swing and miss. So just don't miss 🤷🏼‍♂️

*I do use different fasteners if we are trimming with the smooth side out though

Waterproofing is very important and shouldn't be skimped on

We had a choice to make, how to waterproof or flash behind the fascia. The fascia was to be installed over a 5/8 ply shim, effectively burying the sheeting abd incredible.

So we decided to use the same flashing tape we will be using when we place concrete against the wood framing. We wrapped the tape over the top of the joist and nailed the rug sheeting on top.

This gives us plenty of gap behind the fascia for the v***r barrier. This is the first time we've used this product at the rid line but I think this solution is a very good one.
