Black Girls Do STEM

Black Girls Do STEM Join us in shaping the future.

Black Girls Do STEM empowers Black girls through scholarship, mentorship, and hands-on training in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, building the next generation of innovators and changemakers. Black Girls Do STEM is committed to empowering the spirit of innovation within every Black girl and inspiring them to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators. Through

community outreach and hands-on, workshop-based programs, we create opportunities for Black girls from urban communities to explore STEM in an integrated and engaging way. Our STEM Saturday Academy nurtures curiosity in middle school girls through monthly sessions filled with interactive learning, while our Empowerment, Preparation, and Placement program supports high school students with ACT prep, tutoring, mentorship, internships, and more. By providing these experiences, we aim to actively close the gap between Black female scientists and the broader STEM world, giving Black girls the chance to step into the forefront of the next wave of scientific discovery. Girls in grades 6–12 can join our programs to grow their confidence, explore new possibilities, and connect with inspiring mentors. Community support makes this work possible: donations fund scholarships, resources, and experiences, while volunteers provide vital mentoring and event support that help close the gap in STEM. Visit our website to discover how you can get involved and support a new normal, empowering the next generation of Black Women Doing STEM!

STEM Saturday Academy focus for the month is Fashion Engineering. Girls like fashion and they want to be engineers, so we went from fashion tech to fashion engineering focused on all aspects of design, material and sustainability.

Girls fashioned from recycled materials and used fabrics, they were able to be as creative as possible while understanding sustainability and exploring ways to make fashion more sustainable by upcycling more and throwing away less. In this month design challenge, we channeled project runway and there could only be one winner!

Stay tune for a couple runway show and designs to be on display at our end of year showcase on October 18th, save the date!

Thank you to Good Journey Development Foundation for allowing our youth to come out to the Bustani Garden located in North city. Girls learned about food apartheid from Mama Carol and Mama Dionne and were able to connect it back to South African Apartheid. Girls learned about how communities such as the Academy neighborhood have been separated from healthy food option with very few fresh food grocery stores in the neighborhood, and much of the city limits of St. Louis lacking adequate local grocery stores. This directly supplemented their learning about food systems and the putting together of their very own food system maps! You can see all of their learning this October at our end of program showcase so save the date for Sunday October 18th.

Where do you live? What grocery store do you shop at? How far do you travel?

These are all questions our girls asked as they learned over the last four month about Ag Science and Food Justice. We cannot do this work without our partner! Reach out to them learn about their community garden and get involved.

This , we remember all the brave souls who made the ultimate sacrifice.
We also honor the history of this day, which began in 1865 when newly freed Black Americans and Black Union soldiers in Charleston, SC, held one of the 1st commemorations to honor fallen heroes. Legacy matters. History matters. We matter. 🖤✨

Thank you to A Red Circle Nonprofit Organization for allowing our youth to learn in their outdoor classroom and farm! This experience helps shape their understanding as young girls in STEM as well as community advocates. As girls better understand community structures and/or lack thereof the better they will be at solving their own community problems such as lack of healthy food access. girls spent the last four months learning about Ag Science and growing food, food systems and what it looks like to create a community centered solutions and advocate for food Justice. This does not just give them technology knowledge but also confidence and agency to identify and solve their own problems. We could not make all these relevant connections without the support of partners, so we are grateful for Erica the team at A Red Circle!

Helps us thank our partners, visit their farm and support what they are building!
