sampling is widely used in gas chromatography for analyzing volatile and semi-volatile compounds in pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, environmental materials, chemicals, and biological matrices.

At the heart of a reliable headspace workflow is a seemingly simple consumable: the headspace vial. Unlike autosampler vials for LC, headspace vials are designed to withstand high temperatures and internal pressure that develop during the heating process.

In this article, we provide a comprehensive overview of the key considerations in headspace vial selection, from vial sizes, glass colors, bottom and top designs to vial closures and septa.

The practical stage of the 4th Welch Materials Cup Chromatography Competition concluded successfully on August 19 in Nanjing, China.

After intense online written examinations involving 2,400+ chromatography analysts and university students, 12 finalists participated in the practical stage at Welch Materials' Nanjing facility. For the first time, the competition featured a University Group, bringing together both experienced professionals and aspiring young chromatographers.

The practical competition focused on liquid chromatography method development. Contestants were challenged to complete an entire analytical workflow, including analyzing samples, designing and conducting the experiment, interpreting the data from the experiment and preparing the report, all within a limited time. The competition is designed to test the skills to transfer technical knowledge to real-world problem solving.

As the host of the contest, Welch Materials is proud to support a platform where chromatographers can learn through competition, exchange expertise, and grow through practice.

Congradulations to the winners and all contestants! See you at the 5th Welch Materials Cup next year!

The 2026 Welch Materials Cup Chromatography Competition, held in China from July to August 2026, featured a number of questions designed to assess more than simple knowledge recall. Many of the questions focused on the ability to connect chromatographic theory with practical applications and to apply fundamental principles when faced with complex analytical conditions.

In this article, we have selected 11 representative questions that showed the highest error rates and translated both the questions and their detailed analyses into English.

is a high-intensity functional sweetener that has been widely used in various food products. It has been approved as a food additive in the U.S., European Union, China, among many other regions.

However, excessive long-term intake of neotame may cause adverse effects such as headaches and nausea. Therefore, its application must strictly comply with the maximum usage limits and permitted food categories specified by relevant regulations.

To help laboratories achieve efficient and accurate determination of neotame in food samples, Welch Materials has developed a comprehensive SPE-HPLC and SPE-LC-MS/MS workflow solution, covering sample preparation, purification, and chromatographic analysis.

Chirality, the handedness in chemistry, can mean a significant difference between life-saver and toxicity.

At Welch Materials, we have released the series of analytical and preparative columns as well as packing materials in 2026. Now, to further address the increasing demand for chiral compound analysis, we release three new coated ( -Y, -Z, and -X) and two new immobilized ( and ) chiral stationary phases for Blossmate Chiral series. Both analytical and preparative columns are available.

Read this article to learn about the details of the new chiral stationary phases and explore how chiral chromatography separates enantiomers with its unique mechanism: https://www.welch-us.com/blogs/knowleage-base/chirality-in-chromatography-how-hplc-distinguishes-left-handed-and-right-handed-molecules

Welch Materials' Blossmate chiral columns are designed for high-performance enantiomeric separations. Available in both coated and immobilized polysaccharide phases, Blossmate chiral series products deliver selectivity, reproducibility, and scalability from R&D through commercial purification.

On International Youth Day, Welch Materials is pleased to share our commitment to helping young people grow into leading roles in chromatography.

Not only do our young employees in China, India, among the rest of the would play key roles in R&D, innovation, production, and sales, but we also organize the Welch Materials Cup chromatography competition in China where university students can test their chromatography skills, connect classroom knowledge with real-world challenges, and compete alongside professionals.

On August 18, 5 outstanding university participants from the written examination of the fourth Welch Materials Cup will join the other eight professional competitors for the practical competition stage in Nanjing. Through practical experiments and technical challenges, participants will further demonstrate their chromatography skills and exchange experience with peers from different backgrounds.

In analytical chemistry, spiked recovery rate is a fundamental parameter used to evaluate the accuracy of an analytical method. It reflects how effectively the target analyte can be recovered from a sample matrix during the entire sample preparation and analysis process.

In HPLC, GC, LC-MS, and other instrumental analysis techniques, spiked recovery experiments are widely applied during method validation to verify whether sample extraction, purification, and detection procedures introduce significant analyte loss or matrix interference.

In this article, we explore the three categories of spiked recovery experiments, the calculation of spiked recovery rate and required spiking amount, and the practical experimental guidelines for a valid experiment.

In introductory liquid chromatography training, almost every beginner has heard the following statement: β€œIn reversed-phase chromatography, more polar compounds elute first, while less polar compounds elute later.”

This statement provides a useful general guideline which is often treated by newcomers as an almost absolute rule. But is that true?

In this article, we look closer at why elution order in reversed-phase liquid chromatography can never be reduced to compound polarity alone, and discuss the other factors that heavily affects elution order.
