UC Berkeley iGEM 2012

UC Berkeley iGEM 2012 Teams compete in their regional jamborees first; those that qualify will then advance to the World Championship Jamboree at MIT.

The International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) Competition is an undergraduate biotechnology "Olympics" and the pre-eminent international event for synthetic biology. iGEM challenges teams of students from universities around the world to design and implement a synthetic biology project over the summer and present their results in juried competition in the fall. Our very own Robert Chen just became a 2013-14 Haas Scholar! The Haas Scholar program chooses 20 people from all majors at Berkeley and funds their research over summer and into their senior year. We work hard, we play hard - in the most nerdy fashion possible. Who says you can't enjoy Halloween even though it's 2 nights before an international bioengineering competition? Made with leftover dry ice from packaging, styrofoam boxes, LED lights, and some Halloween worthy creativity.

is in the microscope room taking lots of pictures of yeast cells. All of our hard work since May is being manifested in absolutely beautiful data. Proud of ourselves and more excited than ever to be heading to MIT in 2 days!!!!!

The UC Berkeley team for the International Genetically Engineered Machine competition (iGEM) won first place and the best presentation award at the Americas West Regional Jamboree held at Stanford Oct. 12-14, ensuring their participation at the World Championships at MIT in November.
