When Performance Plus Liquids, Inc., chose Lacy Construction to remodel a 115-year-old, two-story brick structure in downtown Grand Island, Nebraska, neither expected the many historical surprises that greeted them at every turn.

What began as part demolition, part renovation, quickly turned into a historic restoration project. Performance Plus reached out to Lacy in November of 2015 to give the 5,808-square-feet structure (plus basement) a much-needed facelift.

But once this project got under way, we quickly discovered the building wasn’t just one structure.

It was actually two, separated by our most historic find — a brick wall covered in logos painted by hand more than 100 years ago!

The Friesen Ford dealership, spanning 18,751 square feet, is a modern marvel featuring a new showroom, drive-in service center, write-up lanes, a parts department, and a 10-bay service area with ample storage. Owner Jason Friesen's vision for a contemporary structure is evident in the bold exterior, adorned with decorative metal panels, a glass curtain wall, composite aluminum panels, and a curved Alpolic® metal composite brand wall.

Beyond aesthetics, the building boasts cutting-edge technology, including a centralized control system empowering Mr. Friesen to manage lighting, HVAC, door locks, access, and security through his phone. The service area, write-up space, and parts inventory systems are state-of-the-art, prioritizing a comfortable customer experience.

Noteworthy are the energy-efficient electrical and HVAC systems, featuring LED lighting and geothermal heat pump systems, positioning the dealership as an environmentally conscious establishment. Despite facing construction challenges, including record-setting rainfall of 54 inches, innovative solutions like GPS-guided grading and concrete placement systems allowed for the successful completion of the parking lot, setting new company records.

Lacy Construction completed a cutting-edge 150,000 sq ft facility for Hornady Manufacturing in Alda, Nebraska. Hornady, a leading ammunition producer since 1949. Known as Hornady West, the $16 million facility features precast concrete walls, polished floors, and advanced fireproofing for enhanced safety. It includes a dedicated shooting range, a modern cafeteria, open office spaces, and a range of features such as an acoustic wall and ceiling system, elevator, pre-manufactured metal canopies, sunshades, loading dock equipment, pneumatic tube system, and variable air volume (VAV) units ensuring precise and energy-efficient temperature control.

To tackle the challenge of a large concrete footprint, the team harnessed the efficiency of the Ligchine ScreedSaver MAX, operational since 2014, for seamless and rapid screeding. Facing adverse weather conditions during the Nebraska winter, the construction team strategically installed the first four inches of the asphalt driveway and parking lot. This innovative solution not only provided crucial access but also served as a strategic staging and parking area during construction, showcasing the team's adaptability and ingenuity in overcoming challenges. The completion of Hornady West not only marks a milestone in the collaboration between Lacy Construction and Hornady Manufacturing but also sets a new standard for excellence in the ammunition industry.

Project Overview:

This project was an 8200SF addition with 2200 SF of renovation to create 8 new classrooms and to repurpose underused space into a cafeteria space for elementary students.

The Lacy Difference:

The two major challenges we overcame on this project was the issue of Very high ground water (less than 2’ below surface) and Maintaining full use of the existing facility by scheduling work to be completed during times without students and staff.

This project had a very strict budget. Lacy Construction provided guidance to the design team regarding more cost effective construction methods. Lexington did not have all of the trades necessary to complete this project. Lacy Construction was able to engage many subcontractors from outside of the Lexington area to fill the voids. Additionally, Lacy was also able to engage local subs that were available.

Our client deeply appreciated our skills in communication and understanding. One comment that was made by a district administrator, “The project is going so smoothly I kind of forgot we were doing an addition to one of our facilities.
