ATTENTION Heat Pump Owners:
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
Before the storm
1. Switch the thermostat to “Heat” (not Auto)
This prevents the system from trying to cool during weird temperature swings and icing itself up.
2. Avoid big temperature setbacks
Don’t drop the temp way down overnight. Heat pumps work best maintaining a steady temp—cranking it up later can force the backup heat to run nonstop (💸).
3. Check the outdoor unit
• Clear leaves, mulch, snow, or debris
• Make sure it’s raised and not sitting where ice can encase it
• Ensure there’s at least 18–24 inches of clearance around it
4. Test emergency/aux heat
If your system has AUX or Emergency Heat, make sure it actually works before you need it.
5. Replace or clean the air filter
Restricted airflow = poorer heating and more strain during cold weather.

During the storm
6. Let the heat pump run
It’s normal to see steam during defrost cycles—this is NOT smoke and not a problem.
7. Don’t chip ice off the outdoor unit
You can damage the coil. If ice builds up badly, turn the system off and call a pro.
8. Keep supply vents open
Closing vents makes the system work harder and can reduce comfort overall.
9. Use emergency heat sparingly
Emergency heat = expensive. Only use it if the heat pump can’t keep up or the outdoor unit is iced solid.
