A new brewery and taproom is in the works for a stretch of Highway 15 south of Leesburg and Highway 50. The final name hasn't been announced yet, but it's currently called Carolina Road Brewing.

Happy to be involved in this project with HLRA and the team!

It has been another busy month at the construction site for Immanuel Anglican Church. The windows arrived, and were quickly installed along with the exterior doors. The building is now “dried in” which allows for more interior work to be done. The exterior siding was delivered this week, and will be installed soon.

Inside the building, the close-in inspections for plumbing and electrical work were made and approved. Insulation inside the walls is being installed and drywall installation will be done later in the month. The mechanical ductwork is nearly completed, and the interior HVAC units have been placed in the attic space. Piping for the sprinkler system is half done and the tiered ceiling in the sanctuary is beginning to take shape.

Outside, the sewer line installation is completed. The backfilling behind the retaining wall should also be starting soon, and hopefully this month, the permanent electrical power will be brought to the building by NOVEC (the local electric service).

Last week the TLE team celebrated Engineering Week by visiting an elementary school. Planting an interest in science and math at a young age is extremely important, once kids learn how STEM affects things that surround them every day, they get a new perspective.

“We want to show students that there are levels of science and math for everyone, and you don’t have to get into extremely high levels to enjoy learning about how STEM applies to everyone,” Kirby said.

The team at Top Level Engineering (TLE) visited two fourth-grade classes at Cedar Lane Elementary School in Ashburn, Virginia February 25 in honor of Engineers Week (EWeek). Founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers.

“In class, we complete STEM activities and practice the scientific method, so showcasing people whose professions utilize these skills allows students to understand how the material taught can be applied beyond an in-school setting – and hopefully for some, sparking interest in and pursuing a career in the STEM field,” at teacher at Cedar Lane ES said.

“As our industry moves away from uniform hazard to uniform risk-based snow loads, our clients can be assured that Top Level Engineering designs structures for the anticipated level of safety,” Kirby explained in the recent blog on design standards to enhance public safety. https://toplevel.engineering/asce-7-22-design-standard-enhances-public-safety/

At Top Level Engineering, we design buildings to not only meet current engineering standards, but also to meet best practices. In December, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) released changes to the ASCE 7 standard, which is regarded as the authoritative source for the specification of l...

Plan a trip to Lost Barrel Brewery this spring and take a closer look at a TLE project!
This inviting 8,300 square-foot oversized farmhouse is framed entirely of wood, with exposed rafters and girders – that also features these notable engineering elements:

A 3,800-square foot bay area, constructed with tall studs, balloon framing and a pop-up roof to accommodate specialized brewing equipment.

Wooden walls hewn with locally-sourced Southern Pine, that extend to the very top of the bay area – without floors – in order to effectively fit the brewing equipment.

A 1,700-square foot mezzanine.

A 1,700 square foot covered walkway.

A roof with multiple profiles that meet, interconnect and work together.

Building owners and operators desire the assurance that the structure they are managing is safe for those who use it – and tenants desire that reassurance as well. However, many readers may not fully unders...

I want to become a structural engineer. Where should I begin my training?

If you love math, science and problem solving, you’re off to a good start! To become a licensed professional engineer, you will need a four-year degree in civil engineering or architectural engineering, preferably with an emphasis on structural engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum. The next step is to pass the “Fundamentals of Engineering” exam; then work under a licensed professional engineer for four years; then pass the professional engineering exam. This may sound like a lot, but it is definitely worth the effort for a rewarding career.

Part 2 in in our Blog Series on the 2010 earthquake in Haiti is available. Learn more about our founder's experience. "All of that destruction, and all those lives lost, hit me hard and gave me a tremendous appreciation for the extent we go to here in the United States to keep the public safe,” he said. “How many times a day do we walk into various buildings and never have to think about whether it’s going to fall in on us? This is thanks to effective design codes and diligent engineers making sure we are safe.”

As a Structures Specialist, Kirby’s specific job in Haiti was to assess unstable structures, crawl through them to ensure they were safe for the rest of the team, and shore up places that were deemed unsafe so that other team members could use equipment such as jackhammers to carve pathways for the team to safely enter and rescue survivors.

“It was a lot of pressure because so many lives were at risk,” he said. “Our priority was rescuing people and getting them out alive, not saving the building. We had to move quickly, yet we also had to be cautious not to trap people by causing a partial collapse of a building.”

It isn’t until natural or manmade disasters strike that we truly gain an appreciation for building and design standards, why these codes are required, and how they protect us.

The January Blog "What Disasters Teach Us About the Importance of Design Codes" tells the story of Kirby Hartle, Top Level Engineering Founder and Principal, and his experience in 2010 as part of the Kirby was serving on the Urban Search and Rescue Virginia Task Force 1, or VA-TF1, after the earthquake in Haiti.
