When most people think about wineries, they picture vineyards, tasting rooms, and the art of winemaking itself. Hidden within every glass is a network of infrastructure, supported by civil engineering, that helps make it all possible.

For decades, KSN has partnered with wineries throughout the region to help facilities grow and evolve while maintaining safe operations and a welcoming experience for guests. From drainage and utilities to site circulation and expansion planning, civil engineering plays a vital role in supporting the winemaking industry.

Swipe through to explore a few of KSN’s local winery projects and discover how civil engineering supports the wine industry from the ground up!

In support of an exciting new development in Midtown Sacramento, KSN is providing professional surveying services for the planning and design of the proposed Midtown Rail Station. The new station will be part of the broader Valley Rail expansion, helping connect the Central Valley to the Bay Area.

KSN's services include coordination with the design team, aerial mapping, right-of-way mapping, and terrestrial laser scanning of structures to verify existing conditions and support project planning. We look forward to seeing the continued progress of this project for the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission!

KSN was thrilled to attend the Western Regional Survey Conference this March at the Horseshoe in Las Vegas. A few members of our surveying team spent several days connecting with peers and attending sessions on CAD, LiDAR, AI, aerial surveying, and boundary topics.

It was great to reconnect with others in the industry, and we’re eager to build on what we learned and continue pushing our surveying expertise forward.

KSN recently hosted students from David Segal’s English class at Pleasant Grove High School on a hands-on field trip to the Smith Canal Gate in Stockton, CA.

In class, the students are exploring various aspects of civil engineering through a book written by Zora Neal Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, which studies the flooding events that occurred at Lake Okeechobee in 1928. The tour, led by KSN’s Chris Neudeck and Dave Carr, gave students a real-world example of a modern flood control structure while also providing insight into its construction, operational features, and the nearby communities it protects.

Following their visit, students spent time developing design concepts to address the type of flooding studied. They concluded their exercise today by presenting their results to a mock review board that included Dave Carr and KSN’s Neal Colwell. During the presentations, Dave and Neal provided valuable, real-world feedback on the students’ project reports.

Thank you to the students, Mr. Segal, and our staff for helping make this a meaningful and engaging experience!

Soil samples, groundwater insights, and a hands-on look at well construction were just another afternoon of learning at our West Sacramento office.

Last Friday, our team gathered for an impromptu technical talk led by Stephen Julian and Fernanda Loza, who shared key findings from a recent well drilling in Lockeford. Neal Colwell also added perspective on well design and the construction process, bringing the full picture together. It was a WELL-prepared discussion with real DEPTH and insight into the work happening below the surface.

Recognition like this reflects the kind of work that happens when urgency meets expertise.

The Victoria Island Emergency Incident Project was one of those moments. Through these emergency response efforts, KSN was recognized with an ACEC California Engineering Excellence Award at this year’s ACEC Awards Banquet at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, CA. Our team had a great evening celebrating the achievement and connecting with colleagues across the industry.

Congratulations to all of this year’s award recipients! We’re proud to be among such outstanding recipients and even prouder of our team’s dedication to delivering critical solutions when it matters most.
