Thermolift, Inc.

Thermolift, Inc. The Natural Gas Air-Conditioner and Heat Pump ThermoLift Inc. is developing the patented TCHP™ natural gas-powered air conditioner and cold-climate heat pump.

It combines heating, cooling, and hot water delivery into a single appliance utilizing a proven thermodynamic cycle to improve system efficiency. This results in a 30-50% reduction in building heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) costs, as well as associated reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Other advantages include: small physical size, few moving parts for superior system reliability, and the elimination of harmful hydrochlorofluorocarbon refrigerants.

ThermoLift started as a conversation between friends, Dr. Peter Hofbauer and Paul Schwartz. The two were meeting one day in early 2012 and discussing a game changing HVAC technology that could change the way buildings use energy. Hofbauer said that “it was a crying shame the technology isn’t being developed” and with that Paul stopped what he was doing and started to work out of his Long Island basement on a plan to bring the technology to market. Today, ThermoLift is based out of the Advanced Energy Center at Stony Brook University, has 10 full time employees, and has raised nearly $8.1 million in funding, including grants from both the US Department of Energy and the New York State Research and Development Authority. The ThermoLift system is a natural gas driven air conditioner and heat pump that can replace building heating, cooling, and hot-water systems with a single appliance. This appliance is an advanced Vuilleumier Heat Pump (VHP) that can provide a 30-50% reduction in building heating and cooling energy consumption and costs, as well as associated reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

Our Story

The company was founded by Paul Schwartz, and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Hofbauer in 2012 when informal discussions led to the realization that there was a tremendous opportunity in the HVAC industry for a high-efficiency system exploiting lower cost natural gas and renewable fuels. Prof. Hofbauer had already designed the TCHP as an improvement on the Vuilleumier Heat Pump (VHP).

ThermoLift developed three generations of TCHP prototypes, with the first built in 2013, tested in 2014 and completed in 2015. Generation 2 was built in December of 2015, and tested in 2016. Generation 3 was built in 2017 and tested in 2018, including rigorous testing at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Today, ThermoLift is based out of the Advanced Energy Center at Stony Brook University and has raised, to date, $21.5 million. This consists of $16 million in equity capital, approximately $1.5 million in grant funding from the Department of Energy (DOE), the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Wells Fargo IN2 Innovation Incubator and an $5 million convertible preferred bridge loan from Topspin Partners as its initial commitment towards the Series B round.
