🎉Join us in congratulating Dr. Mingyu Qiao on securing a $1.875 million grant from the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks Office!👏

Partnering with the Idaho National Laboratory, Dr. Qiao’s team will transform sustainable, locally grown seaweed into an eco-friendly alternative to imported palm oil. By using an innovative process known as arrested anaerobic digestion, this cutting-edge project is tackling critical supply chain vulnerabilities.

UConn Nutritional Sciences undergraduates—Caitlyn English and Kayla Stropoli—are bringing vital nutrition education to the Hartford community as summer interns with Hartford Hospital’s Food4Health program.

They’ve developed a series of short, engaging videos covering a variety of health and wellness topics for the program’s website. Kayla and Caitlyn conduct research and translate evidence-based data into accessible resources, working alongside David Juros, Founder and Principal of Food4Health, as well as registered dietitians and other healthcare professionals.

It's a busy and rewarding summer for both students as they ensure every detail is accurate, compelling, and tailored to the health literacy needs of local residents.

Elena Camacho, a UConn Nutritional Sciences undergraduate, is working this summer as a Research & Development intern at plant-based protein innovator PURIS.

Elena’s work so far has centered on assessing how plant-based ingredients perform across critical metrics such as texture, viscosity, stability, and sensory attributes. While her role covers ingredient functionality and analytical evaluation, Elena is most passionate about her projects in food product application. She’s gained hands-on experience developing and evaluating prototype food concepts ranging from spoonable products to beverages, frozen desserts, and snacks. Elena is particularly fascinated by how laboratory data translates into real-world product performance, observing firsthand how minor formulation adjustments can dramatically alter texture, flavor delivery, stability, and overall consumer experience.

We wish Elena continued success and a meaningful conclusion to her summer internship at PURIS!

The six fellows in this summer’s Bridging the Gap 2 (BGP2) program are settling into their research sites while sharing interests and experiences at their Wednesday gatherings. BGP2 is a 10-week summer research program for undergraduate students from UConn campuses, CT community colleges, and other 2- and 4-year institutions in CT. The students conduct hands-on experiments in high-caliber research labs alongside their mentors, including principal investigators and graduate students. They also gain a deeper understanding of how scientific research translates into practical health applications. Wishing all of you an exploratory and meaningful summer!!
