The UConn Student Branch of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is a professional organization for students with interests in aerospace, whether aeronautical or astronautical. We strive to promote an environment, where members can follow their passions through hands-on design projects, advance their career with industry presentations and networking opportunities, and buil

d lasting friendships. Our organization participates in design projects and competitions, where members engage in cutting edge technical conversations and garner hands-on experience they would never get in the classroom alone. Our purpose is to ignite and celebrate aerospace ingenuity and collaboration. We provide many unique opportunities for professional and technical development, such as guest lectures from industry and academic experts, technical conferences, and a wide range of design competitions. For more information, visit our website and the official national site at aiaa.org. Other resources:

Are you interested in learning more about RDEs (Rotating Detonation Engines)??? Last semester our student branch held a virtual presentation by Dr. Craig Nordeen discussing the history/ evolution, the theory of, and his own work on advancing this type of unsteady engine. RDEs are a form of pressure gain combustion, where detonations propagate continuously around an annular chamber. Rather than operating on the constant-pressure heat addition of the Brayton cycle, rotating detonation engines have the potential to have a much higher efficiency than the current, conventional gas turbine engines (up to ~15%!) by the detonative combustion greatly increasing the pressure in a constant-volume heat addition.
If you want to learn more, check out the recorded presentation on our YouTube channel! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3igO7zcd5U&t=2s

Hi Everyone! Thank you so much to everyone that has donated to our organization so far! We greatly appreciate it and your support will go a long way for our members.

Below (previous post) is a video of a static fire of the student researched and developed (SRAD) Alumaflame solid rocket motor conducted by the Rocketry Team in UConn's AIAA student branch. This is an important milestone each year by the Rocketry Team to validate their solid rocket motor, which is a step closer towards constructing a sounding rocket to carry a scientific payload to 30,000 ft for the Spaceport America Cup competition. This motor propels the 12’4” rocket carrying a scientific payload at supersonic speeds up to Mach 1.5! WOW, check out the video below!

Today marks the start of Week 3 of the 2021 Ignite Fundraiser starts today! The competition for Weeks 3 and 4 is for the highest # of UConn GOLD Alumni Donors (graduating classes from 2010 to 2020), so we would love support if you fall into this category! However, if you don’t fall into that category and still want to donate, that’s great, too! All donations go directly to funding design projects where our members can explore their interests in aerospace.
