Happy Thursday! Today we are reminding everyone about the importance of the designation of the Competent Person.

OSHA requires companies like TUCI to designate someone on the job as the responsible party for critical functions and safety. That person is known as the "Competent Person". This person is responsible for analyzing the soil characteristics on a job and classifying the soil so that proper protective systems are evaluated and chosen. They are also responsible for inspecting the protective systems to ensure that trench and crew safety. This person has the authority from TUCI to remove employees from hazardous areas until such hazards have been resolved.

It takes a team effort to maintain job safety and we should all be aware of our surroundings in order to do so, but the Competent Person serves as the main hub for issues that arise. Should you notice an issue or a potential hazard, please inform your Competent Person of such.

Take a moment to review the attached reminder on Competent Person and ask yourself- Do you know who your Competent Person is?

Think Safe Thursday this week focuses on the importance of staying cool. We are entering into the Summer season, which means it's getting hotter and more humid. Our industry is faced with the significant risk of heat exhaustion due to our outdoor work during this time of year. The attached flier outlines some easy safety tips that you can follow to help prevent and treat heat related illness.
Heat related illnesses occur when your body absorbs more heat from the environment or generates more heat through physical activity than it can dissipate. Usually, you produce sweat to make your body cool down, helping to maintain a stable internal body temperature. However, if your body cannot dissipate that excess heat, your internal temperature begins to rise. Dehydration and lack or decrease in sweating will contribute to heat related illness since your body is unable to cool itself down. Outdoor temperatures make things worse as well.

As we enter into the hottest parts of the year, please remember to take heat related illnesses seriously, they can be life-threatening. Know the symptoms, practice cooling measures, and be safe!

Good morning!

Today's think safe Thursday highlights the importance of site safety. All TUCI job sites follow the key points in the attached graphic. The presence of fire extinguishers is required by the State. Failure to adhere to this requirement can result in a fine. Lifting devices, such as chains, must comply with the OSHA and ASME standards to receive tagging in order to be of legal use. Proper signage is required by VDOT. This requirement is designed to keep the work area, its inhabitants, and pedestrians safe. All TUCI job sites are kept clean and free of trash. Our jobs sites are a direct reflection of our company, and we want to make sure that they are kept neat at all times. A clean job site also lessens the risk for slips, trips, and falls. These safety tips are important follow to ensure that we keep each other safe during the fast-paced day-to-day activities of our industry.

This Think Safe Thursday we are taking a few moments to discuss Mental Health Awareness. Workplace safety doesn't just include physical health, but mental health as well. There are multiple factors present within the construction industry that contribute to mental health concerns. The "tough it out " culture, long hours, high-stress, and fast paced work environment are a few of the reasons that our industry has the second-highest rate of su***de amongst its workers. These rates are 75% higher than the general population.

It is important to spread awareness of this silent crisis so that we can help prevent declining mental health and mediate those experiencing such concerns. All TUCI employees are a part of our team and our family and we want to make sure that you have the tools necessary to deal with any mental health issues that you may face in your life. Please take a moment to prioritize your mental health safety today.

April is National Safe Digging Month, so this week's Think Safe Thursday highlights digging safety tips. Following these tips can help reduce damage to vital infrastructure and minimize interruptions to residential areas. If the excavation is within 2 feet of a marked utility line, expose the utility line by hand digging and keep all mechanized equipment at least 2 feet away from the extremities of the utility.

Remember- excavation may begin when:
-All notified utilities have either marked their lines or reported that they have no facilities in the area of excavation
OR
-the marking period has expired (after 7:00 AM on the third working day after notice to the center.)
OR
-Miss Utility informs you that no member operators need to be notified of the excavation.

Your Think Safe Thursday issue this week includes tips for driving through a work zone. This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), hosted by VDOT every spring at the start of construction season, to encourage safe travel through a work zone.

We understand the importance of spreading work zone safety tips. Here at TUCI, we expect everyone to go home safely to their families every day.
