How to do a Tannery Quality Submersible Tan using PRO-1 LEATHER TANNING CONCENTRATE:
(easy "water volume" formula)
Note: once you get your water volume, everything is per gallon

Tan Solution: (for mountable skins)
- drain skins from pickle 1 hour and weigh
- 1/2 gallon water per lb. skin
- 1/2 lb. salt per gallon water
- 1 1/2 fl. oz. LTC per gallon
- add skin and tan 20-24 hours minimum (agitate periodically)

(Note: for decorative skins use 3-4 times the amount of LTC for more plushness)

Fixate Tan:
- 1 teaspoon baking soda per gallon (1 tablespoon / 3 gallon)
- dip out some tan solution & pre-mix...then add into tan / mix well
- soak 1 full hour (agitate periodically)
- check pH of tan solution at end of the hour for target pH 4.5-5.0
- repeat this step until you reach tan solution pH 4.5-5.0
- once pH 4.5-5.0, leave in tan soaking 1-3 hours (or to end of day)
- drain hair-side-out / or skin-side-down overnight
- oil next morning w/ LEATHER FINISHING OIL (use the TANLIQUOR oil for furs)
- sweat oil in 24-48 hours (folded skin-to-skin / hair-side out)

Short-Cut Formula for Avg. Deer Cape:
- 3 gallon water
- 1 1/2 lb. salt
- 4 fl. oz. LTC
- 1 tablespoon baking soda per administration for fixation

Short-Cut Formula for Avg. Bobcat:
- 1 gallon water
- 1/2 lb. salt
- 1 1/2 fl. oz. LTC
- 1 teaspoon baking soda per administration for fixation

Short-Cut Formula for Avg. Coyote:
(for large Coyote use Deer Tan Formula)
- 2 gallon water
- 1 lb. salt
- 3 fl. oz. LTC
- 2 teaspoon baking soda per administration for fixation

Note regarding fixation:
(each administration of baking soda is referred to as a "feed")
- you want it to take 3 feeds minimum to reach solution pH 4.0
- if you get there say in 2 feeds, add a dribble of acid to lower pH
- then reduce your baking soda per feed by 1/3 and go again
- it may take more than 3 feeds to reach solution pH 4.5-5.0
- but if it consistently takes more than 3 feeds, increase baking soda by 1/3

Why we neutralize / finish the PRO-MAXX TAN the way we do:
(Option 1 Neutralization vs. Option 2)

We double the amount of water at the end of the PRO-MAXX tanning solution to "de-salt the solution to an exact salt finish of 1/2 lb. per gallon" - this is the same salt level used in tannery style submersible tans.
For example: the 5-gallon whitetail formula has 5 lbs. of salt, but by doubling the water at the end the solution, it becomes 10 gallons but still has the same 5 lb. of salt = 1/2 lb. per gallon during the 1-hour neutralization.
And by neutralizing "in the tan" the baking soda forces the remaining tanning agent in the PRO-MAXX tan solution "INTO THE SKIN" - this again is similar to how tannery style submersible tans are finished, by fixating all the remaining tanning agent in the tan solution into the skin.

We offer Neutralization Option 2 for those who want to do multiple capes in a multiple PRO-MAXX tan solution together - i.e. it does become a lot of water at the end if you do 3 capes in a 15-gallon PRO-MAXX tan and double the water to 30 gallons per Option 1 as listed above.
Option 2 Neutralization for the PRO-MAXX is more in line with a Brush-On Tan finish. The capes are neutralized separately in 5 gallons water w/ 2 cups salt and 1/2 cup baking soda for 30 minutes.
