This month we’re spotlighting our Olympia base, where crews work out of a Sound Energy facility. Roughly six crews head out from Olympia most days. Like most of our bases, the primary work is PSE dock work, covering transmission, distribution, and underground. Our civil and InfraSource crews also work out of the base when needed, along with our Cable Remediation Program crews. Whatever PSE needs, the Olympia team is there for them.

Sharing a building with the customer isn’t the case at every base we operate, and the Olympia crew told us it works well. They described a strong relationship with the PSE team they see every day. It has helped so much to have open communication, often before jobs even begin.

But when we visited, the thing that came up again and again was the people. Everyone we talked to described the base as a family, and when you look at how long they’ve been together, it makes sense.

Base Manager Rob Baker started with Potelco in 2002 and has been at Olympia since 2017. Alongside him is General Foreman Mike McDougal, who joined Potelco in 2004, has been at Olympia since 2013, and stepped into the GF role in 2019. Jody, Olympia’s storekeeper, has been with Potelco since 2002 and has held a number of roles at several locations along the way. He landed at Olympia in 2008 and has been the base storekeeper since 2020. Taylor, one of the base mechanics, has been with Potelco for seven years, the last two at Olympia.

Keeping everything moving behind the scenes are Jessica, Deb, Jennica, and Nicole, with nine, seven, four, and two years with the company. Rounding out the Olympia team are Whitney, Ryan, Logan, and Scott, who aren’t pictured.

Time together builds bonds, and it’s clear this team continues to show up for each other every day, whether that’s out in the field, in the yard, or behind the desk. Thank you to everyone at Olympia for having us out and for the work you do every day.

Christopher Thomas shares his personal phone number every time he gets in front of an audience.

He means it. Over the years, he's answered hundreds of calls from Potelco and InfraSource employees who needed someone to talk to.

Christopher is a Marine Corps veteran and journeyman lineman with more than 15 years in the trade. Today his work centers on training, leadership, and strengthening the culture around the people who do the work. Answering those calls isn't in his job description. He does it anyway.

He recently sat down with Ryan and Clint on the Powerline Podcast for an open conversation about mental health, isolation, identity, and looking out for one another in the trades. They talk about road life, chasing overtime, losing connection at home, and what happens when too much of who you are gets tied to the job.

to Tacoma, 1986.

Gas was 93 cents a gallon. Top Gun was playing in every theater. Kids were begging for a Nintendo, and the Tacoma Dome was still the new building in town.

Down on the tideflats, the Port of Tacoma had just climbed to sixth in the nation for container traffic. Downtown, the Frank Russell Building was going up on A Street.

And Potelco crews were 21 years in, working an underground project for the City of Tacoma.

Across nine sites in Northern and Central California, our crews built standalone microgrid systems for PG&E, replacing overhead power lines in high fire threat areas with solar, battery storage, and backup generation. Instead of hardening the line, you remove it, and give the property its own independent source of power. We worked alongside ELM MicroGrid and Cushing Terrell to bring these systems online, part of a program recognized in Fast Company's 2024 World Changing Ideas Awards.

National Construction Appreciation Week is a good reminder of what goes into the work we do every day. Behind every line built, every outage restored, and every project completed safely is a team of people who show up rain or shine, on the job site and behind the scenes in the office supporting them.

To everyone at Potelco, from crews in the field to the teams keeping projects moving from a desk: thank you for the work you do. It matters more than most people realize.

2,977 times over, on September 11th. The weight of that doesn't fade, and it shouldn't. What we do with it is up to us. Look out for the people around you. It matters more than you know.
