June is National Safety Month. 🦺

For 30 years, the National Safety Council has recognized National Safety Month as an opportunity to strengthen safety awareness, prevent injuries, and save lives, both on the job and at home.

At Sumter Utilities, safety is more than a priority; it's a commitment we make every day. Be sure to check the National Safety Council's website and social channels throughout the month for valuable resources, insights, and tools to share with your crews. https://loom.ly/WJTDwOI

Let's work together to make safety a habit that lasts far beyond June.

Sumter lineman Brian Stepp was making an underground repair on June 1 when he noticed flames through a nearby kitchen window. With no response at the front door, Brian called 911 and entered the house to extinguish the fire, saving the residents from extensive damage to their home.

The family showered Brian with appreciation, and we presented him with the President's Safety Coin for his quick action!

Way to go, Brian!

The Capacity Model (TCM) aims to eliminate life-threatening, life-altering, and life-ending events by focusing on human performance and building the capacity to fail safely. Within TCM, there are seven human performance principles, and we're breaking them down for you.

Human Performance Principle #1: People Make Mistakes.

Error is a normal and unavoidable part of human performance. Even the best, most experienced, and most conscientious workers WILL make mistakes; it's inevitable.

The Capacity Model accepts this as a baseline reality rather than treating error as a failure of individual discipline or attention. By acknowledging that mistakes are bound to happen, we shift the focus away from trying to eliminate human error entirely and toward designing work in a way that anticipates it.

Stay tuned as we highlight the rest of the seven Human Performance Principles!

Sumter Utilities employee Pate Williams was working on a four-lane highway when he came across a lost wallet. Instead of leaving it behind, he tracked down the owner and returned it.

We learned about Pate's act of kindness through a Facebook post from the wallet owner's father and promptly recognized Pate with the Sumter Utilities President's Coin.

In his Facebook post, the father said it best: "Show a kind gesture to all those you cross paths with, whether in traditional or unique ways. It's just a simple wallet with a few dollars in it… But the gesture is worth more than the wallet can hold. Thank you, sir!"

Thank you, Pate, for going the extra mile both on and off the job. This kind of character doesn't go unnoticed, and we are thankful to have you on our team.

Some behind-the-scenes moments from when Carhartt teamed up with Quanta Services, Inc. last year and joined our Sumter crews in the Carolinas, restoring power to communities hit by devastating summer storms.

We’re proud to have partnered with Quanta and Carhartt to highlight our crews and the critical work they do to support communities across the Southeast every day.

Last month, Sumter Utilities participated in the Alabama Rural Electric Association (AREA) 2026 Annual Meeting & Tradeshow in Montgomery, Alabama.

This event brings together Alabama's electric cooperative network and its industry partners each year for a mix of governance, education, and connection, and it's one we're glad to be a part of. Keith Ferguson, Superintendent, attended on behalf of Sumter.

Showing up for our industry matters. Thanks to Keith for representing the team.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

In our industry, safety goes beyond hard hats and harnesses; it’s about protecting what’s inside our heads, too. Together, we can build not only power infrastructure but a culture of care, founded on a strong support system for one another.

Check in on your crews, share resources, and remember: asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. This Mental Health Awareness Month and beyond, let’s look out for one another, on and off the job site. 💚
