🍂 Fall Lawn Update for Carroll & Howard County 🍂
The recent rain has helped a lot. Carroll County has had about 2¼ inches more rain than normal over the last 90 days, and the Isaias remnants dropped close to 3 inches in some spots. The catch is that we're still about 18% below normal for the year, and Carroll is still listed in moderate drought. A lot of that rain soaked straight into dry ground, so the deeper soil is still catching up.
What that means for your lawn right now:
🌱 Overseed now. The soil is warm and finally moist, which makes this the best seeding window we'll get this year. Bare or thin spots from the summer drought will fill in before winter.
🕳️ Aerate first if you can. Dry summers leave soil compacted. Aerating lets water, air, and seed actually get down to the roots.
💧 Keep watering new seed. One good rain doesn't end a drought. Keep new seed damp with light, frequent watering until it's up.
✂️ Mow a little higher. Keep it around 3 to 3½ inches until the last few cuts. Taller grass holds moisture and builds stronger roots.
🍁 Don't let leaves pile up. Mulch them with the mower or rake them off. A thick, wet mat smothers grass, especially new seed.
🧪 Feed for the roots. A fall fertilizer feeds the roots now so you get a greener lawn in spring.
