It's International ShakeOut Day! While earthquake drills are an important part of preparedness in Washington, it's also a good time to review tsunami evacuation plans and make sure you know where to go in an emergency.

At AHBL, resilience is part of what we do. Our structural engineers specialize in seismic evaluations and earthquake-resistant design, helping ensure buildings are prepared to withstand seismic events and protect their occupants.

Our Back-to-School Donation Drive benefiting Tacoma Public Schools' Franklin Elementary School has officially wrapped up, and we were proud to deliver the donations this week!

After meeting with Franklin Elementary Principal Abby Sloan and learning more about the needs of students and families, AHBL employees came together to collect essential items including food pantry supplies, hygiene products, clothing, playground cones, and other everyday necessities that help support student success both inside and outside the classroom.

We're grateful to Tacoma Public Schools and the Franklin Elementary School community for the opportunity to partner on this effort and make a meaningful impact. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped make the drive a success.

Throughout Back-to-School Month, we celebrated the schools, students, and communities we serve. This donation drive was a reminder that supporting education extends beyond the projects we help create.

We're proud of what our AHBL team accomplished together during Back-to-School Month.

Throughout September, our employees came together to support local students and educators through donations of school supplies, classroom essentials, and other items that help create a positive learning environment. Thanks to this collective effort, we've gathered more than $500 worth of donated items, along with a donation of playground cones to support outdoor activities and student engagement.

We're excited to deliver these donations to Franklin Elementary next week, where they'll help teachers and staff address classroom needs and support students throughout the school year.

Thank you to everyone who donated, spread the word, and helped make this initiative a success. Community impact happens through small acts of generosity, and we're grateful to be part of a team that shows up for our local schools.

As Back-to-School Month comes to a close, we're taking a closer look at an often-overlooked aspect of educational environments: the infrastructure that helps schools remain safe, accessible, and functional for generations of students.

In our latest article,"How Infrastructure Improvements Are Extending the Life of Aging School Campuses," AHBL Principal Bill Fierst, PE, shares insights from more than 26 years of experience helping school districts modernize existing campuses across Washington. From safer drop-off areas and improved accessibility to stormwater infrastructure, utility upgrades, and campus security enhancements, many of the most impactful improvements happen outside the classroom.

We recently had the opportunity to join Association for Learning Environments and fellow industry partners for a tour of the Maritime|253 Skills Center, led by Sheena Hewett of TCF Architecture and supported by Torin Kingshill of BNBuilders.

It was a packed event, and for good reason.

Tour attendees got an up-close look at the hands-on learning environments preparing students for careers in the maritime, manufacturing, and trades industries, while AHBL's Andrea Sauter shared insights into the facility's structural design, including its suspended walkways and Port-facing balcony. More than a school, Maritime|253 is a powerful investment in students, workforce development, and the future of our region.

Now open and welcoming students from multiple school districts, the facility is already providing opportunities for hands-on technical training, industry exposure, and career exploration. AHBL is proud to have supported the project through land use planning and structural engineering services.

Thank you to TCF Architecture, BNBuilders,Tacoma Public Schools, Port of Tacoma, and the entire project team for an insightful tour of this remarkable facility.

Did you know? Maritime|253 Skills Center was created to help prepare the next generation of maritime professionals while addressing critical workforce needs across our region.

As part of AHBL's Back-to-School Month, we're highlighting this innovative Tacoma Public Schools facility and sharing a few facts you may not know:

⚓ Waterfront learning, real-world experience: Students train on Tacoma's working waterfront alongside maritime industry professionals.

🎓 Free career training: Students gain hands-on experience, industry credentials, and college-connected opportunities at no cost.

🔧 Industry-grade learning environments: Programs include manufacturing, marine technology, robotics, welding, fabrication, and vessel simulation.

👥 Regional impact: The facility was designed to serve approximately 300 students from across Pierce County each year.

🏛️ Inspired by Tacoma's working waterfront: Exposed timber framing and mass timber elements draw from the industrial character and warehouses that helped shape the region's maritime identity.

🤝 AHBL's role: AHBL provided structural engineering and land use planning services for both the Maritime|253 Skills Center and the adjacent Port of Tacoma Business Center.

We're proud to have partnered with Tacoma Public Schools, TCF Architecture, BNBuilders, the Port of Tacoma, and many other project stakeholders to help bring this transformative educational facility to life.
