A passenger car on the Little Schuylkill Railroad. Photo circa 1860 in Tamaqua, PA. This railroad line is said to be the first railroad in the country to haul anthracite coal by steam train. The line was built in 1829 and connected the mines in the Tamaqua area with the Schuylkill Canal in Port Clinton. The steam engine shown here, the Catawissa, was purchased from Liverpool, England in 1832.
