Suppression is VERY different from emotional regulation.
❗Appearing calm, cool, and collected on the outside while you're experiencing turmoil on the inside.
❗Stuffing your feelings down and acting like you don't care.
❗Sweeping things under the rug and pretending they're not there.
That is suppression.
Just because we don't acknowledge our emotions doesn't mean they magically disappear.
Unprocessed emotions can keep our bodies in a state of stress, contributing to nervous system dysregulation, inflammation, physical tension, and potentially taking a toll on our long-term health.
Emotional regulation is something very different.
✅ It's acknowledging how you feel rather than pretending you don't feel it.
✅ It's finding healthy ways to move through emotions rather than stuffing them down.
✅ It's reminding your nervous system that you're still safe, even when the emotions feel heavy.
Our society programs us to numb and dissociate, which are forms of suppression. Here's the thing about suppression... You can only stuff so much down before it starts showing up somewhere else.
Sometimes that looks like:
❌ Becoming reactive over little things.
❌ Having a shorter fuse and less patience.
❌ Lashing out at people you love.
❌ Experiencing chronic stress that eventually takes a toll on your health.
Sometimes we don't even realize how much we've been suppressing because we've gotten so good at appearing like everything is fine. But looking calm and BEING regulated are two very different things.
At Bliss Wellness Studio, part of the work we do is helping people develop emotional regulation skills through somatic healing, nervous system support, and healthy ways to navigate heavy emotions.
The goal isn't to stop feeling.
It's learning how to feel without allowing those emotions to overwhelm your nervous system or compromise your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
