After installing the Helical piles to protect the tree roots, we then form and pour a concrete pile cap on top of them. The bottom of this cap is not dug into the ground like the footing but spans over the tree's root system. None of the weight of the new home will be felt by the tree!

So one way to build close to a large oak tree is to install helical piles to support the foundation without digging into the ground and damaging the tree's foundation (root zone).

Building in close proximity to large oak trees requires protection of their roots @ the surface. One way to achieve this is to cover the ground with 4" to 5" of mulch and then cover the mulch with 3/4" sheets of plywood which will mitigate damage during construction.
