The Murray Atomic Missile pedal car was manufactured from approximately 1955 through 1963, when pedal cars were among the most popular children’s toys in America. Designed to resemble the rockets and jet aircraft capturing the country’s imagination, the Atomic Missile remains one of the most distinctive pedal cars of its era.
Several parts from this car were heavily rusted, corroded, or partially missing. We 3D scanned the surviving pieces along with the areas where they mount to the car. Using the scan data, we digitally reconstructed the damaged components and designed new replacement parts to fit the original vehicle. We then 3D printed prototypes to verify their fit.
It’s a great example of how 3D scanning, reverse engineering, and 3D printing can help preserve history by recreating rare parts that are no longer available.
