Some do's and don'ts for this freezing weather we're getting.❄️ ❄️!!
✅ DO:
• If your pipes are prone to freezing, let your cold water drip. The movement of the water makes it harder for it to freeze and relieves the pressure so the pipe won't burst.
• You can also leave the under-sink cabinet doors open if it's on an exterior wall to allow some of the warm house air to circulate and help.
• Heat wrap and insulate your water lines to prevent freezing.
• Keep your thermostat set consistently.
• Make sure your furnace filter is new or clean for its best efficiency.
• If your condensation line from the furnace is run outside or in a place where it is able to freeze, reroute it, apply heat tape, insulation, or somehow reduce exposure to the cold. If it freezes, your furnace will shut down to prevent water damage.
• Block off cold air drafts from the outside. They make a big difference: the adjustable skirts on storm doors, plastic wrapping windows, foaming inlets, etc.
• Please make sure your property is accessible. If it's hard for you to get out, it's hard for emergency services to get in in case there is an emergency.
🚫 DON'T:
• Don't turn off your heat completely.
• Don't leave space heaters unattended; these things are great but can be dangerous.
• Don't use an extension cord to run your space heater unless you have to, and if you do, make sure it is the appropriate gauge to handle the load.
• Don't overload electrical outlets.
• Don't wait until pipes burst or damage appears.
• Don't use gas heaters in your home. You might be in for a permanent nap. 💤
• If you happen to lose power, don't try to rig your generator up to your home unless you are a professional. You can lose your home or potentially your life.
Taking a few preventative steps now can save in heating and electrical bills, repair bills and potentially your properties and lives.
