Menopause changes hormones. But the biology shifting alongside them may tell an even bigger story.

A human study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology examined 216 women across premenopause, perimenopause, and post menopause looking not only at estradiol and FSH, but also at the lipids and proteins carried within HDL particles.

One detail caught our attention:

A plasmalogen dimethyl acetal marker, DMA 17:0, was associated with estradiol in the study.

That doesn’t mean one causes the other. And this research did not test plasmalogen supplementation.

What it does offer is another fascinating window into how hormonal transitions, lipid biology, and cellular membrane-related molecules may intersect.

There is still much to learn and that’s exactly why research like this matters.

Save this for the next time you think of a cell membrane as “just a wall.”

A cell membrane is more than an outer edge.

It’s a dynamic interface where the cell exchanges information with its environment, regulates what moves in and out, and helps organize what happens next.

That’s what we mean when we say:

MEMBRANES ARE NOT WALLS.
THEY ARE CONTROL PANELS.

Not a literal control panel, of course but a different way to visualize just how active the boundary of a cell really is.

And once you start looking at the cell through the lens of membrane biology, the science gets a lot more interesting.

SAVE THIS because “𝐸𝓈𝓈𝑒𝓃𝓉𝒾𝒶𝓁” doesn’t mean what most people think it means. 

When an amino acid is called essential, it doesn’t mean it is more important than the others.

It means your body cannot produce it in sufficient amounts so it must come from your diet.

And while leucine receives attention for helping signal muscle protein synthesis, it cannot do the job alone. Your body still needs all nine essential amino acids to efficiently build new muscle proteins.

The takeaway? Muscle health isn’t about chasing one celebrated nutrient. It’s about giving the body the complete set of building blocks it needs.

Every cell is wrapped in a membrane—a dynamic structure involved in how the cell organizes, communicates, adapts, and responds to its environment.

For years, mitochondria have gotten most of the attention when we talk about aging.

But this new Nature Aging study had us looking somewhere else: peroxisomes.

They’re tiny organelles, but they’re involved in some pretty important things like lipid metabolism and how different parts of the cell communicate with each other.

And this is where it gets especially interesting for us: the first steps of plasmalogen biosynthesis happen inside the peroxisome.

The study itself wasn’t about plasmalogens, but it adds another layer to the bigger picture of how lipid biology, cell membranes, and aging are connected.

That’s one of our favorite things about science. One study doesn’t tell the whole story, but every new discovery helps us understand a little more.
