A lot of families around here are getting back into the school routine this week or already have. Early mornings, packed schedules, and somewhere in all that chaos, your AC is still running nonstop trying to keep the house comfortable through it all.

We're into the second week of August, right in the thick of what's usually the toughest stretch of summer. If your AC's made it this far without a hitch, that's a good sign it's in decent shape. If it hasn't, this is usually when things come to a head.

Refrigerant leaks are sneaky. Your system doesn't just stop working one day. It slowly gets worse, and because it's gradual, people don't always notice until it's a real problem.

Signs to watch for: your AC runs longer than it used to but doesn't cool as well, you notice ice forming on the refrigerant line outside, or your energy bill has crept up without much explanation.

Low refrigerant isn't something you top off like oil in a car. It means there's a leak somewhere, and that leak needs to be found and fixed, or it'll just keep getting low again.

People ask us this a lot. "What do you even do during a tune-up?" Fair question, since it can feel like a mystery if you've never had one.

Here's the short version of what we check:

Refrigerant levels, to make sure your system has the right amount to cool properly. Electrical connections, since loose ones can cause bigger problems down the line. The condensate drain, because a clog there can lead to water damage. Coils, both inside and out, cleaned if needed. Airflow, to catch anything restricting it. And we test the whole system to see how it's actually performing, not just whether it turns on.

It's not just a quick look and a wave goodbye. It's meant to catch the small stuff before it becomes the expensive stuff.

Here's something easy you can do today. Go stand near your AC, inside or the outdoor unit, and just listen for ten seconds.

Normal sounds: a steady hum, maybe a soft whoosh of air, the outdoor fan spinning.

Not normal: banging, grinding, high pitched squealing, clicking that repeats over and over, or anything that sounds like metal on metal.

A lot of people live with a weird noise for weeks because the AC is "still working." But noises are usually the first warning sign before something actually breaks. Catching it at the noise stage is a lot cheaper than catching it at the no-AC stage.

August is here, and if you've lived on this coast a while, you know what that means. This is usually the month that finishes people off. Not July. August. The heat's been building all summer and it doesn't let up just because the calendar flipped.

Your AC has been running since basically April at this point. If it's held up this long without a hiccup, good sign. If it's been showing any wear, slower cooling, odd sounds, rooms falling behind, this is the month that tends to expose it fully.

We say this every year and it's still true. The end of July into early August is usually the worst stretch of summer down here. Not the hottest calendar day necessarily, but the most consistent, grinding heat.

Your AC's felt every bit of it. If it's been solid this whole time, that's a good sign. If it's been fighting you, taking longer, running louder, costing more, this next week or two is when that catches up with it.

Good morning, Gulf Coast.

Quick one for the middle of the week. Your outdoor unit has a coil on it, and that coil is what actually releases the heat your AC pulls out of your house. If it's coated in dirt, pollen, or grass clippings, it can't do that job well.

A dirty coil means your system works harder to do the same job, which means higher bills and more wear over time. It's one of those things that's invisible until you know to look for it.

You can rinse it gently with a hose from the outside, but don't go crazy with a pressure washer, that can bend the fins. If it's caked on, that's a job for us.
