A watch looks pretty simple from the outside.

Inside? Not so much.

This Wild Wednesday CT scan gives us a look at the internal structure of a Timex watch—but the real story isn't the watch.

❓️ How do you know you're looking at a real feature in a part versus an artifact introduced during imaging ❓️

This is a good example of why getting a CT scan isn't simply a matter of putting a part in the machine and pressing scan.

The X-ray beam interacts with the material as it passes through the part. Depending on the material, thickness, density, and scan parameters, those interactions can introduce artifacts that affect what we're actually seeing in the data.

Additive manufacturing makes it possible to build incredibly complex internal cooling channels—but verifying what was actually produced can be a different challenge.

How do you inspect a feature you can't physically reach?

That's one of the biggest challenges when completing an AS9102 First Article Inspection on complex aerospace components.

Modern parts can contain internal cooling channels, lattice structures, enclosed passages, bonded interfaces, hidden wall thickness variations, and other features that conventional inspection equipment may not be able to access.

1. You could section the part to see what's inside, but then you no longer have the intact part you're trying to qualify.

2. You could use Industrial CT scanning services as a non-destructive way to look inside.

With CT, engineers can evaluate internal and external geometry, wall thickness, porosity, voids, internal passages, assembly alignment, and other hidden conditions from a single 3D dataset.

What you're looking at isn't a microscope image—it's a precision CT measurement inside a lithium-ion battery.

These measurements show anode overhang, an important internal feature that battery engineers monitor during development and manufacturing.

Using industrial CT scanning, we can inspect and measure internal battery geometry without cutting the cell open.
