Residential Drywall Repair in a Hallway and Bathroom.. I actually recorded this video after the contractor told me what he wanted me to complete. I do this as you should to so you can look back at it to come up with a game plan to know what to do first and so on.

What I didn’t mention was the removal of the hallway ceiling center piece and the trimming on and under the cove.

I do these recording when I go to do estimates to figure out a price and for my game plan.

FOLLOW ME to see the transformational process as I do the work.

In the meantime Tell Me how you would attack this project or just watch and see,
I would love to read your opinions in the comments. Watch it and tell me your thoughts.

Top 3 ingredients when taping new drywall, use:
1. All Purpose Joint Compound
2. Paper Tape
3. Arcuate Taping Knife (that self feathers)

Always add some clean water to the All Purpose Joint compound when you mix it up.

Turning a closet doorway into a solid drywall wall starts with proper framing.
First use 2x4’s to frame the doorway in, it wasn’t necessary to install a bottom plate nor a vertical stud.
Secure the studs tightly so the new drywall will go on flush with the old wall surface. This is the foundation for a seamless drywall finish.

Next, measure the opening carefully and cut your drywall to fit. Before hanging the drywall, check the thickness so it matches the existing wall and sits perfectly flush. Fasten the drywall to the new framing using drywall screws, keeping the screws slightly dimpled without breaking the paper. The goal is to make the new drywall blend smoothly into the previous wall with no raised edges or low spots.

After hanging the drywall, prefill all gaps, joints, and open spaces with setting-type joint compound before taping. Prefilling locks everything together and prevents cracks, shadow lines, or visible seams from showing later. Once the prefill hardens, apply drywall tape over all joints and begin coating the area in smooth, even layers. Feather each coat wider and wider into the existing wall so the repair disappears completely. Sand or wet sand lightly between coats as needed. When finished properly, nobody will ever know there was once a closet doorway or door there.

Wait 10 to 15 minutes (up to 30 minutes in humid conditions) after spraying knockdown texture before knocking it down, allowing it to lose its sheen and “haze”. The texture should appear firm but still wet on top; if it smears significantly, it is too wet; if it doesn’t flatten, it is too dry.
Always spray the ceiling first then the walls, by the time you finish spraying the walls (in a bedroom) it will be time to knockdown the ceiling then the walls after starting with the first wall you started spraying.

Ever wonder how someone reaches way up there to repair, texture, or even paint a high stairway ceiling or wall? 👀

Have you ever looked up in a stairwell and thought:“How in the world do they get up there?” 😅

Was that you? Drop a comment below ⬇️

Wait 10 to 30 minutes after spraying texture before knocking it down, or 1–2 minutes for small spray-can repairs. The texture is ready when it loses its sheen, looks flatter, and feels firm to the touch but still soft enough to flatten

When you’re taping drywall, the mud should be smooth and creamy — but not soupy.
Think of it like this:

* Taping mud should be soft enough to spread easy, but thick enough to stay on your knife without dripping off.
* If it’s too watery, the tape can slide around, the mud can run off the knife, and it becomes messy and harder to control.

The reason taping mud is mixed a little thinner is so it can easily go behind the tape and bond it to the drywall.

For coating with all-purpose mud, you want the mud a little thicker.
Why?

Because all-purpose mud shrinks as it dries. If the mud is too thin, it will shrink more, leaving low spots, dents, and extra sanding work.

A thicker coating mix:

* Builds the joint better
* Shrinks less
* Covers imperfections easier
* Gives a flatter, smoother finish

Simple way to remember it:

* Taping mud = smoother and creamier for bonding tape
* Coating mud = thicker for building and finishing

A good rule:
If the mud runs off your knife, it’s probably too thin.
If it stays on your knife and spreads smooth without dragging, you’re close to the right consistency.

LEAVE A COMMENT: if this was HELPFUL….
