University of Toledo Rocketry Club

University of Toledo Rocketry Club The University of Toledo Rocketry Club is an organization dedicated to spreading enthusiasm in space!

The University of Toledo Rocketry Club was founded in the Spring of 2015. A small group of students obsessed with space travel came together and decided it would be feasible to build a large rocket. The group utilizes mainly engineering majors to design build and test high powered and small scale rockets. The group is not limited to engineering, we also work in technical report writing, education,

finances and artwork. Currently we are working on a high powered rocket in the hopes of competing at the NASA Student Launch in Alabama. The group plans to try to compete in this yearly and eventually move out to other high powered rocket competition with more advance designs and payloads. In addition to rocket building and launches we hold demonstrations for students K-12 and develop interest in STEM careers. The group also holds field trips to high powered rocket launches, museums and hopefully in the future we can go and attend an actual full scale rocket launch. In the far future we would like look into working on a CubeSat or working on a liquid fueled engine. This organization is less than a year old and has a lot of momentum and potential. We come from a university whose official nickname is the β€œRockets” and our mascot is an astronaut, we hope we can build a program that lives up to that namesake and moves on to do big things in the future.

Last week, our team participated in the final stage of the NASA USLI competition. Astraeus was able to fly in Huntsville and had a successful flight, except for an unexpected payload malfunction. We are incredibly thankful for the opportunity to compete and fly with so many other talented teams.
Along our journey, we faced challenges that created valuable learning experiences for our team. Every test and redesign helped us grow as future engineers, and we're excited to apply these lessons to next years design.
Thanks to all the support from our members, sponsors, and mentor Rick Sharp who helped make this year possible. Stay tuned to follow our progress for next year's competition!

The University of Toledo Today is the Rocket Forward Day of Giving! πŸš€
The University of Toledo Rocketry Club is a nonprofit 501(c)3 engineering organization dedicated to designing, building, testing, and launching high-powered rockets. Our organization competes in the annual NASA USLI competition against other teams across the nation. We are excited to receive support to continue our mission of hands-on learning by engaging in real engineering projects.

The University of Toledo Rocketry Club recently presented their CDR (Critical Design Review) report to NASA for the University Student Launch Initiative. This report highlights the main design elements of this year's vehicle and payload functions. During this report presentation, NASA gave the team positive feedback as well as the green light to begin constructing according to our report. In the coming months the team will launch several sub-scale and full-scale flights and continue working on the FRR report. Go Astraeus!

The University of Toledo Rocketry Club recently submitted their PDR report and presented their preliminary design to NASA! After the team's proposal was accepted in October they have been hard at work on engineering a design meeting this year's criteria.

This year's design criteria are to:
1) Reach 4,000 to 6,000 ft altitude
2) Take a 50 mL sample of soil
3) Take any amount of 3 different measurements:
a) Ph
b) Electrical Conductivity
c) Nitrate
4) Design and emulate a habitat for a crew (stemnauts).

Now that the PDR has been accepted and NASA has given their feedback, the team is working on CDR which is due in January.

More updates to come in the following months. Go Astraeus!

During the 25th Anniversary NASA Student Launch, our organization took part in the publicly held Rocket Fair at the Von Braun Center in downtown Huntsville, Alabama. During this event, we showed off the Project Hyperion full-scale launch vehicle, air brakes, payload, and our program experiences. Our group also talked to other teams to discuss their success and failures with their own Student Launch projects. This was a great experience for our club members and we can't wait to compete again next year!

On March 17th 2025, our organization submitted our Flight Readiness Review deliverables for Project Hyperion. This important NASA Student Launch deliverable showcases our team's work in verifying the launch vehicle and payload for Launch Week in Huntsville by documenting the construction and testing of our most important systems.

Following this set of deliverables, on April 10th 2025, our team completed a teleconference with the NASA Student Launch panel to further showcase our FRR Report. This presentation consisted of Christian Behrens (Secretary and Simulations/Testing Lead), Matthew Lomax (Air Brakes Electronics Lead), Dylan Elking (Payload Electronics Lead), Kendrick Ramos (Safety and Recovery Lead), Lucas Paskey (President and Operations Lead), Brody Greenwood (Vice President and Vehicle Lead), Mike Vargas (Payload Lead), and Austin Ott (Air Brakes Lead).

Finally, on April 14th 2025, the team submitted an Flight Readiness Review Addendum to further validate the launch vehicle and payload flights before planning to launch in Huntsville, Alabama on May 3rd 2025.
