What happens when the closest replacement skylight is about 3 inches too wide?

You plan the finish before the ceiling becomes an eyesore.

On this J.A.Y. Construction project, the exact replacement size was unavailable. The closest unit was slightly off on height and about 3 inches over on width.

First, the skylight was installed and made weathertight. Then came the interior work:

• Remove drywall around the opening.
• Pack each side with a 2x4.
• Rip down 1/2-inch birch plywood for extension jambs.
• Install 1x4 casing.

For homeowners in Ocean and Monmouth Counties, this is a useful reminder: the roof installation and the room-side finish both belong in the conversation.
