A slab poured in fall faces its hardest winter first, before it has reached full strength, so how you treat it that first season matters. Keep de-icing salt off it entirely and use sand for traction instead, because chloride de-icers accelerate the surface freeze and thaw that causes scaling. Shovel with a plastic blade rather than a steel edge. Keep your downspouts and grading pushing water away from the edges so meltwater is not pooling and refreezing against fresh concrete. And know when to wait: stamped or decorative finishes, heavy excavation in frozen ground, and large open flatwork with no way to cover the pour usually read better on a spring calendar.
