Any paved surface around here has to get through a hard winter, and decorative concrete is no exception. The same freeze-thaw cycle that stresses a plain driveway applies: water seeps in, freezes, expands, and pushes on the surface. The good news is that a properly built decorative slab handles it well, and construction is what makes the difference. A durable surface starts below the surface, with a compacted base, a sound mix, proper thickness, and reinforcement. We reinforce with wire and fiber mesh to resist cracking, place control joints to manage where any cracking happens, and seal the surface to limit how much water it absorbs. Over time, and especially through our Western New York freeze-thaw winters, individual units can shift, settle unevenly, and let weeds grow up between them. Decorative concrete is one continuous surface instead. No joints for weeds to exploit, no loose pieces to work free, and often a lower installed cost than natural stone with less ongoing upkeep.
