I've been MIA for a bit, due to surgery. I'm out of the forge for a few weeks still. However, I've been designing some nice little every day carry knives for when I can back at it again.

What do you think?

Great stuff in the works over here at the forge. Plenty of work to do. Roughed out some handle scales for the camp knife kukri earlier today, just trying to decide what liner material to use. Outside of that, there's some finish grinding to do before assembly and final shaping. Pictures to come.

On the damascus front, did the final grinding on my damascus EDC blade and final etch. Boy is it pretty. I'm just trying to decide the best looking handle scales to pair with the amazing pattern.

What's next? Well, work should commence on a test through-tang bowie with a threaded pommel and a custom tanto style K-bar. Stay tuned.

Also, here's a picture of my two favorite hammers. Bonus points to anyone who can tell me the difference between the two and what each is used for.

Attempt 2 at the Jason Knight kukri went great. Forged, quenched, and tempered today. Ran it through the grinder and put some straight/flat bevels on it using the 6 inch contact wheel and a basic edge (still sharp enough to shave with).

Ran it through the gauntlet. Smashed it into a hickory log 10 times, sliced through paper, shaved arm hair, smashed it into my anvil twice, and then sliced clean through paper. Not a mark on the edge to show it had been in contact with anything.

Need to polish it up, put some handle scales on it, and then take it to the buffer. She'll be a pretty one when I'm done.

Lovely vanity etch on this 496 layer damascus fashion blade. I was going for something halfway between a bowie and a kukri.

What's a vanity etch? Well, to show off the different layers in damascus, they need to be etched in acid. The vanity etch is when the smith is almost done with their work and wants to see what the pattern of metal looks like, so they do a vanity etch. From there, they grind some more and polish up the final bits of the blade before doing the final etch.

Damascus was made by Billy Collier. Blade forged and shaped by me here at Phoenix Fire Forge Works.

Scored some amazing metal this weekend. Some AEBL stainless, some pristine 5160, and two sets of leaf spring so big I could barely lift them.

Also scored a commission to replicate a knife from the new Avatar movie. Watch here for progress pics and some crafting videos as I knock out some new projects.

Well, the first attempt at this blade (pictured below at an earlier stage) failed. Cracks appeared everywhere after temper. 52100 steel is a finnicky beast.

On to Attempt 2...this time with 5160 steel.
