# # What Does It Really Mean to “Bless God”?

We often say, **“We bless God.”**

But have you ever stopped to ask: *How can I bless the God who already has everything?*

When God blesses us, He **imparts** goodness to us.

But when we bless God, we **acknowledge, honour, celebrate and respond to the goodness that is already in Him.**

David said:

> “Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name.”\
> — Psalm 103:1

David was not adding anything to God.

He was commanding his soul:

**Recognize Him.**\
**Remember Him.**\
**Speak well of Him.**\
**Honour Him.**\
**Respond to Him.**

And the next verse makes it even clearer:

> “And forget not all His benefits.”\
> — Psalm 103:2

There is a relationship between **remembering God** and **blessing God**.

When you remember His faithfulness, provision, mercy, proteprepction, correction, deliverance and grace—and you respond with thanksgiving—you are blessing Him.

But blessing God goes beyond words.

We bless God when:

• **We recognize Him** — “You are God, and You are worthy.”\
• **We remember His works** — “I have not forgotten what You have done.”\
• **We thank Him** — “I acknowledge You as my Source.”\
• **We praise Him** — “I will speak well of Your name.”\
• **We obey Him** — “My life will agree with what my mouth says about You.”\
• **We give and serve** — “Because You are worthy, I respond with what I have.”\
• **We represent Him well** — “Let people encounter something of Your goodness through my life.”

This is important:

**Obedience is praise with consequences.**

It is possible to sing, “You are Lord,” while refusing God’s Lordship over our decisions, relationships, money, work and ambitions.

True worship eventually bends the knee.

And perhaps this is why David speaks to his own soul:

**“Bless the LORD, O my soul.”**

Sometimes you will not *feel* like praising.

Your circumstances may look wrong.

Your emotions may be tired.

Your expectations may be disappointed.

But you can still command your soul:

**Remember who God is.**\
**Remember what He has done.**\
**Bless His name.**

Worship does not make God bigger.

**Worship restores God to His proper size in our perception.**

So when we say:

**“We bless God,”**

we are really saying:

*We acknowledge You as our Source.*\
*We remember Your goodness.*\
*We speak well of Your name.*\
*We honour Your worth.*\
*We submit to Your Lordship.*\
*And we will live in a way that makes Your goodness visible.*

**God blesses us through impartation.**\
**We bless God through adoration, honour and response.**
