Everyone knows that shielded-twisted-pair (STP) is specified with a differential impedance of 100 Ohms.

But does anyone know what is the single-ended impedance of Cat 7 cable is when one leg of the STP is tied to ground?

Reflectometry shows that it's 54 Ω, which is close enough to 50 Ω to be a good substitute in many applications, especially when high channel counts make coax unwieldy and expensive.

We recently tested a pair of PRL-RJ45-SMA adapters, back to back, with Marvell-based 10GBaseT Network Interface Cards, and they successfully negotiated a 10Gbit/sec link and carried iperf traffic at near the theoretical maximum 9.5 Gbit/sec:
